Short Christmas Murder Mystery By Lorna (PureTextuality.com)This is the second in this series, that features two authors, not writing the same book, but instead, each writing every other book. This is the second time this duo has written a set of novellas about the small town of Solitude, Oregon. These are mysteries, with a thriller aspect, and each features one of two couples-the same two that were in the original set of books.I received a copy of this from Net Galley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.Taking place soon after the first in the series,Tracks of Her Tears by Melinda Leigh, this one begins with the body of a murdered woman being found in a motel room. The police chief, Zane Duncan, and his girlfriend, police officer Stevie Taylor, are called in to investigate. Since in the previous book, another woman had been murdered and the murderer is in jail, their thought is that it could have been done by the same person because the body has been there awhile. So the question here is, is there one murderer in town, or is there two? And of course, why this girl, as they already know the motive for the first murder.I enjoyed the characters of Stevie and Zane as much as I did in the first series featuring them, titled, Rogue River. In that series, Stevie had come back to town, after being a big city police officer for years. Her father had died, leaving her mother and brother alone on their ranch. Of course, Stevie and Zane fell in love in that novella. Stevie is still taking it slow(seven months), and won’t move in with him-although she is there most nights. For Zane’s part, he can’t wait to marry her.She’s everything he wants. So yes, this is both a mystery and a continuation of the couple’s relationship.Since this is a novella, I am not going more into the mystery. I enjoyed this read, probably a tiny bit more than the first one, but they both are definitely worth the read. I recommend this, and the previous novella, to readers of romantic suspense or mystery. If you enjoy these, be sure to check out the previous series,Rogue River.FYI-No sexual scenes, but some violence-for people probably 15+

By John Kurtze DEAD IN HER TRACKS By Kendra Elliot catches the attention of her readers on the very first page placing them next to her protagonists Solitude, Oregon’s Police Chief Zane Duncan and Officer Stevie Taylor. They are investigating a murder of a young woman at a local motel on Christmas morning. Zane and Stevie and the rest of the Taylor clan are still coming to terms with the murder of Bruce’s girlfriend and Bruce’s auto accident. Zane looks for a connection between the murder of the young woman and the woman reported missing two months agoElliot's story takes an unexpected turn when Bob Fletcher, who murdered Bruce’s girlfriend, Amber, is found dead in his jail cell. The whole town is on edge as the murders point towards the fact Zane and Stevie are looking for a serial killer. The plot picks up a faster pace when Zane learns there two additional women missing from a neighboring town. The author keeps her story moving forward giving readers backstory on events leading up to murder investigations in Solitude, Oregon. Zane and Stevie are certain there is a connection between the three missing woman and murders of the woman in the motel and bar owner, Bob Fletcher.The author takes the time to add romance to the storyline with the engagement of Zane and Stevie. At the same time, events unfold in the murder investigation, and Elliot adds a twist to the story causing readers to hold their breath. Readers will be on the edge of their seats as Zane rushes to find answers. It becomes a matter of life and death as Zane struggles to make the important connection between the missing woman and the murderers. The unpredictable ending to DEAD IN HER TRACKS is skillfully written keeping readers in the dark until the last page. Elliot’s story earns a 5-star ranking and a must-read recommendation.

It picks up right after the events that happened in the first novella, Tracks of Her Tears. Although, it’s a different author, the pace picks up perfectly and I felt like there was a deeper look into this group of characters as opposed to the first group. The possibility of two killers preying on the small town of Solitude, Oregon becomes more clear and intriguing in this installment. You have to read Tracks of Her Tears first, in order to truly get the full understanding of the situation.This time, the spotlight is on Solitude police officer Stevie Taylor and police chief Zane Duncan. The fact that they are dating adds an interesting dimension to the search for the serial killer. In the prior novella, Stevie’s brother Bruce had a brush with one of the killers and barely survived. Unfortunately, Bruce’s girlfriend was among one of the victims. The fact that this is a small town makes everything seem to be personal to the town and the police. Zane finds it very hard to believe that his town is harboring brutal killers. At the same time, reminders of mortality have a positive effect on the romance between Stevie and Zane. The small town interactions appear to be very genuine and easily illustrate how easy it is for a killer to hide in plain sight. As with most mysteries, the identity of the killer isn’t revealed until the end. I had no idea.There’s so much more to say but I can’t get into much because every detail would give it away. I will say that the romantic component was sweet and you can’t help but like Stevie and Zane. They are truly meant for each other. Everything was well-balanced. I look forward to the next novella in the series.**Received a copy from Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest unbiased opinion.**
