0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. an excellent book, but overpriced By Goggle-Eyed Slewfoot I use the original English version in my ESL class. The book can be applied for many purposes, including color names and verb conjugations. I even made a musical setting of this book for a program for the parents. However, the offer here is overpriced. The book consists of 7 illustrations with captions, reading "I see red," "I see blue," and so forth. If you have a printer, you might do almost as well by making a Google search.

From Bestselling Fantasy/Paranormal author, W.J. May comes a new kind of vampire shifter series. Get ready to be blown away! Lost Vampire Book 1 of the Bit-Lit Series The future is not a safe place. When Tay Maslov was a girl, she lived in New York State, and her playground were the sun-drenched fields of her parent’s farm. But all that changed when one day the Servitors came, looking for new recruits for their master, the Archon Jeremiah of Brooklyn. The vampires – or Elders – rule the cities now, and hardly any humans are left out in the wildernesses. All of that land is given over to the weird animal-like Shifters. The Elders run the Blood Banks, enforced Blood Donations, as well as the Blood Clubs, and the culls of insurgents. When Tay Maslov, many years later and now a vampire herself, servant to her Archon Jeremiah, refuses to go on a cull of the poor humans she is cast down, becomes a Feral; hated by all. It is in this state that she meets Kaiden, himself a creature of the night – but far different from her. Which of them will survive what comes next? Book 2 - Cost of Blood Book 3 - - Coming in January 2016

I found the ending slightly anticlimactic, that may be my fault though. I was interested to see where Tays and Kaidens relationship was going to go but may be I'm not patient enough. I just wanted a little more interaction between them. However I am going to be reading the next book in the series because I've GOT to know if they meet up again!

A Stupendous Paranormal Read By Laura Hernandez I am so happy I stumbled upon this amazing read by accident on Amazon because I loved it and read it all the same day. The world is full of humans, vampires and shifters and each have their own agenda. When Tay is named Feral and cast out from her brood and city she doesn't know what to do with herself. When she meets the stranger Kaiden she doesn't know what to make of him and from there the intrigue continues its fast growing crescendo that left me speechless as revelations floored me.The world building is absolutely stupendous, the storyline is action packed and the characters are strong, fierce and even witty and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Two of my favorite quotes were:"I thought that I would be helping the resistance. I didn't know that it would turn me into a monster.""I'm a monster. An abomination. A liability to the cause."This is a must read book.

Nonomine might give Maddy everything she wants, but at what price?

Now with a new epilogue (2/9/2016). Maddy knows she can’t give her scientist husband the one thing he really wants—an heir with his genes and genius. Or can she? Nonomine offers them the chance they’ve both been waiting for, even if it means living at nine times the normal human rate. But when things start to go wrong, the price they must pay is more than either of them ever dreamed. Please note: This is a complete science fictional short story with an "aha" ending. There is no sequel to buy in order to discover the rest. It's all included here. It's not a romance or a saga, but a short story that we hope will get you thinking and wondering what YOU would do in Maddy's place. The scenario she faces might not be too far away in our own future. We have included a sample chapter of one of the author's full-length books for your added enjoyment.

It's a sweet, short story about a scientist and his wife who are searching for a way to have a child past her debilitating allergies. Her first pregnancy nearly killed her and she's terrified of a second one. A scientific break through opens a door for them, but in the end it comes with a terrific cost. The set up for this story was interesting and the science fiction aspects not overwhelming painting it as a near future with faster travel and great strides in medical science. While the short format didn't give me a lot of space to get to know the characters really well , their personalities still came across in the writing, something that Ms Branton excels at. I believed in the relationship between the couple and their conflicting desires. I also appreciated the relationship with the step son and what he added to the mix.The place where I struggle with this story is in the completion of the plot arc. I'm not going to give details as to avoid spoilers, but I didn't entirely buy the solution to the biggest problem of the story and it felt like it ended really abruptly. I would have liked a flash forward with a few paragraphs to show whether the proffered solution was real and how/if it really worked. In the end this was prolly a 3.5 read for me, but the sweetness and charm of the central relationship gives it a bump to 4.

I teared up reading the end. This is touching, and fast and strangely will leave you hoping for a great future. It touched me deeply because I had horrible pregnancies and each of my four were miracles themselves. You have to think from the start. Fascinating piece of writing.

Wife and I are planning our first trip abroad together and this book has EVERYTHING you need to plan a visit to Italy. We supplemented with other resources but if you start here, you will find everything you need. I appreciate especially the 'self-guided walking tours,' the extensive lodging & eating options, and the tips on how to reach your destinations after arriving in train stations or airports. There is even a priority list with recommended cities to see if you only have X number of days (anywhere from 4-21) days in country - but each city chapter also has a "Rome in a day" type section as well.I do wish some of the maps were larger, but for planning purposes, this book is excellent.

It’s Christmastime at Marlow House Bed and Breakfast, and Danielle has a full house. When a woman, stranded far from home, shows up on the doorstep and begs for a room for the night, how can Danielle tell her the inn is full and turn her away? After all, it’s almost Christmas. The woman makes quite an impression on the other guests, especially when she mysteriously disappears. Is it foul play—or something supernatural?

Brown I have read all of the books in this series but this is by far the best one... there were some very funny moments between Walt and the new guest Chris.. I actually laughed out loud.. I really hope Chris will be a permanent character at Marlow House... Ms Holmes books keep you interested from beginning to end. Am anxiously waiting for the next book to come out.. I am glad I started reading this early in the morning because I couldn't put it down.. what a great way to spend a day.. curled up reading a book that draws you in, makes you laugh and keeps you in suspense. and of course leaves you wanting more adventures from all at Marlow House...

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Best Ghost Series By Kristen Piersa Honestly, this series is one of my favorite ghost series. Danielle moves into a house that used to be owned by her aunt without knowing there's a ghost there. With her gift of sight, she can see ghosts like Walt Marlow who died in that very house less than a hundred years ago. She turns the house into a bed and breakfast house over his objections since he feels like it's still his house.Danielle also somehow comes with a trouble magnet. She keeps ending up in trouble, being framed for murder or thief, or whatever. So with Danielle's gift of sight, she's able to talk to ghosts and help the cops or at least the victims find peace by solving their murder. It's tough though when the cops think she's really guilty and tries to pin it on her. Although by now, the cops are starting to realize that she's actually a good lady. They have finally let up on suspecting her for every little thing. But there's also a good side to all of this trouble, she meets new friends that makes her happy.I so love Danielle. I can't wait to see her to get a real love interest soon. There seems to be two guys that could be it. Marlow or the guy who can see ghosts too. I'm torn between the two of them. I mean at least the guy who can see ghosts is alive. Marlow is not, although I would love to see him happy too. They deserved it after all of that trouble! I've read all of the books available in this series and all of them are pretty good. Can't wait for the newest one to come out soon.

Elisa Mancini is a Nobody. Painfully insecure, more at ease with books than with people, at twenty-three she’s a university dropout living at her aunt’s, drifting from one day to another, and waiting for something big to happen. Judith Shapiro is a Somebody. Arrogant and eccentric, she’s a superstar of mathematics, the subject of scientific articles, and the undisputed ruler of the world around her. In a trillionth of a trillionth of a second, Elisa falls madly in love with Judith Shapiro. For sixty-eight days she is the mistress of an internationally acclaimed mathematician. But loving Judith Shapiro is like running a marathon in a war zone. As days pass, Elisa’s wild infatuation takes on a suicidal bent, and the world around her starts to go to pieces. Just as everything is about to blow up, the moment of truth comes. Absolute Truth, For Beginners is a story about truth, time and love. Or about identity, positive nursing, degrees of happiness, Baroque art, scientific theories, homosexual lovemaking, arrogant television producers, and becoming who you really are.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An intense and realistic love story By Léatitia Brière From my blog :Just like with her first book, Witchcraft Couture, Katarina West give us a unique, beautiful and gripping story. Way more than with her previous book, I felt so much for her main character and the things she was going through. Of course, there are a lot of things to say about Absolute Truth, For beginners, but I will give you four absolute truth you should know regarding this novel. Four things that will make you say : « I have to read this book too! »The first thing I absolutly loved, making this book a MUST READ, is the writing ! When you start reading Absolute Truth, it's hard to stop. I had to because of work and it was frustrating to not be able to continue turning the pages. This is the kind of writing and story that makes you think, reflect and realize things about yourself. The way Elisa falls in love is realistic and shows a bit of innocence, it also shows how love can be blind and makes you act as someone else, though it makes you grow up at the same time. At least, that's how I felt about the main character's journey until the end of the book.Second absolute truth is that this book is for everyone. Trully, I can say that you just need to enjoy great books to read this one. You will love the setting, the universe in which the characters are living in or just simply, as I just said above, because of the writing. It was a real pleasure to discover page after page, the core of the story and its meanings.Third excellent and absolute truth about this book : An intense and unique love story that will stay in your mind and heart. There are so many things to discuss about this book : is it wrong really to fall in love when you're not supposed to ? What does it say about you ? What to do when things get out of control ? Is there really a line we can cross regarding being with the one we love ?Fourth absolute truth is that this is a really good second book. Though I enjoyed the first one, I love Absolute Truth for beginners even more. I find a few of the same ingredients : the love of art, interesting characters, a special universe or just a very well developped topic along the book.I hope my review makes you want to discover Katarina West's books. She is a talented and very kind person.Happy reading!

The below review is from my blog SimplyBeingGreat. This book made me think a lot because I found myself connecting with the main character, a 24 year-old girl uncertain as to where her life is headed. The book starts with Elisabetta arriving at her first job, after over a year of graduating college. She has suffered the post-grad struggle, which I know so well and finally, found something to keep her feet wet, even if it’s not in her field of study, Art History.Throughout the story, taking place in Italy, a series of events unfold intertwined with the idea of time, love, unhealthy relationships, homosexuality, lack of self love, hopelessness, despair, mental instability and ultimately forgiveness. In just a little over 300 pages I was submerged into a story that really broke my heart.I thought of how many people, including myself, go through this long period of self-doubt and lack of self-love; swearing on everything that they are the only one’s walking on this unfortunate and long path. I know, because I find myself there at times. Then you pick up a book like Absolute Truth, For Beginners and you’re reminded that there is someone out there walking a path much similar to yours (maybe even worse and twice as complicated.)Each reader is different therefore, a book can get interpreted in many ways. For me, this book is a reminder. It reminded me that time is tricky, precious and rare. That life is what you make of it and that love is the hardest puzzle to ever be made…but that there’s someone out there willing to make it with you. You just have to wait for time to be on your side.*I kindly received the book for my honest review.*

Not because I had any doubt about Ms. West’s talent, but because I had no idea what this book was about. I just didn’t grasp what I was in store for, so I began the book with completely open eyes, and quickly became mesmerized with the words I read! It blew me away!Ms. West creates such likable characters. I commiserated with Elisa - I felt her nervousness and inability to enjoy the company of someone due to feelings of inadequacy… I have also felt the desperation of not being able to let go, of waiting for that one phone call.I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone, so I will end with saying that I feel like I actually mourned this book when I finished it. That’s how good it was.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Action-packed with a splash of romance and a lot of humor By Arianne Cruz This book was like a spinoff from The Girl That Care Forgot trilogy. For those of you who haven't read Andrew Sutherland's books, they're filled with action and strategy. I really appreciated the intelligent characters, but also that they're very humorous. This book honestly started out a bit slow for me while I read about Al battling his depression. However, as soon as he arrived in Portland, things started getting serious. I really enjoyed his time with Samantha. They had chemistry and it was nice to see Al bounce back from his depression.Another character I really enjoyed was Detective Sellers. His humor was so entertaining, and combined with Al's humor, it was magic. I couldn't put this book down and I wanted to know what happened next.As for the villain of the story, the author really did a great job portraying a character that was pure evil and psychotic. There were times when I needed a bit of a buffer before I went to bed, lest I get nightmares from reading about the villain. That was how good it was! Finally, I loved the character of Bear. Bless him, he was so adorable, literally like a teddy bear. He was such a gentle spirit, but also a protective one. Oh, and he was a great cook as well!I do also want to mention that, though this book's cover wasn't my favorite -- I've been known to judge a book by its cover -- I was glad that I read it. Oh my gosh, so good!I would highly recommend this book, or if you want to start from the very beginning, check out The Girl That Care Forgot trilogy. If you love action with a little bit of romance, you would really enjoy reading these books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Killer! By blondwonderwoman This book had me on the edge of my seat. I was completely wrapped up in Al's story. Toward the end, I actually started reading slower because I didn't want it to end. I am dying for Sutherland's next novel to come out! Do yourself a favor and read the Girl that Care Forgot trilogy and then this gem of a novel, Bridge City. Both are captivating, thrilling, and all-around kick @$$.

By DarkJade I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.Bruce and Jenna have known each other for five years. Bruce saved Jenna's life and they have been friends ever since. Only Jenna does not know Bruce is a bear shifter and his bear assisted in her rescue. Bruce likes Jenna but does not pursue her because he does not want her to know he is a shifter and believes this is a secret that must never be told to a human. Bruce is part of a pack of shifter of all different varieties and all have been running from something. Jenna also likes Bruce but feels their friendship may be ruined if she lets him know. In walks the Alpha, a female wereleopard, ready to convince Bruce they should mate and get rid of Jenna and the potential risk of exposure. This is a series of books and does end in a cliffhanger. It was an quick read and I am looking forward to the rest of the story. Bruce is stuck between a love he feels for Jenna and what his Alpha is demanding of him "for the better of the pack."

She has already threatened Jenna to keep her hands off. . I was given this arc copy for a fair review loved the story and now can not wait to read more.

In 1970, Lenny can no longer deny that his wife is undergoing a profound change. Despite her relatively young age, her mind succumbs to forgetfulness. Now, he goes as far back as the moment he met Natasha during WWII, when he was a wounded warrior and she—a star, brilliant yet illusive. Natasha was a riddle to him then, and to this day, with all the changes she has gone through, she still is. “Digging into the past, mining its moments, trying to piece them together this way and that, dusting off each memory of Natasha, of how we were, the highs and lows of the music of us, to find out where the problem may have started?” To their son, Ben, that may seem like an exercise in futility. For Lenny, it is a necessary process of discovery, one that is as tormenting as it is delightful. He often wonders: can we ever understand, truly understand each other—soldier and musician, man and woman, one heart and another? Will we ever again dance together to the same beat? Is there a point where we may still touch? This is a historical fiction novel about world war II wounded warrior military romance, a young woman love story. It is also one of family sagas best sellers. Do you like this genre, especially when it is tinged with family saga romance, and wrapped with a second chance in love with a strong female lead? Then this family saga series, Still Life with Memories, is for you.

Lazar When I write a book review, I don’t like to rehash the plot—that information is easily accessible in the book description. What I prefer is to share how the book made me feel, and what I valued between its covers.Uvi Poznansky is a literary tour de force in a contemporary age when the quality of writing often takes a back seat to the quick thrill, or to be more precise, the quick buck. She writes as she paints, with careful, vibrant strokes of amazing clarity and color. Whether you are a reader or writer, teacher or student, you owe it to yourself read her work. You will be transported to a world where life is examined from a poet’s point of view, where you live in vignettes so real that you can’t help but love and care for the characters.I have read all of Poznansky’s work, but this book resonated more deeply with me than all the previous titles, which I truly enjoyed. I suppose it is because I am an inveterate romantic. I ached for the young, “flashback” characters to come together. I shouted at them to wake up and smell the coffee when they missed opportunities to get together, and I reveled in the sweet endings when they finally connected. The atmosphere of the 1940s is beautifully portrayed, and on a secondary level only to the (mostly) unrequited love story, it was my next treasured experience while reading this book. I loved the sounds and sights of the era, the music, the cars, and the lifestyles so well depicted. It was a fascinating dip into the life of those dynamic times. If you are aching for a lyrical read, for something above and beyond the usual offerings in the field of fiction, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Uvi Poznansky’s The Music of Us.--Aaron Paul Lazar

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The quick and the truth By Tailer With Uvi Poznansky, one never expects an ordinary read. Don't believe me: look inside this book. One glance at the chapter titles in "The Music of Us" part of the longer epic "Still Life with Memories," will let you know you are in for a special treat. War Can Wait. Amazing Grace. Silence of the Muse. A Lowdown Groove. Uvi Poznansky takes you questing, every time she writes, into the closets and behind the curtains of your most private mind. This book must be experienced. It fits no genre (thank heavens). It offers no simple axioms that pass for learning. It's a family saga, a book about World War II, a book about music, about a shadow forever to be cast by the war that should have ended all wars -- and it's as much about tomorrow as yesterday. It's full of damage and redemption, pain and joy, brought to life by a narrator who wields words like a scalpel. In an age where books worth reading are rare, where individuality is eschewed for comfy tropes, where books are formulas easily deconstructed into their constituent parts and turned into video games or simpering dramatic serials, comes Uvi, her flaming sword raised high, ready to cut through to the quick or the truth, whichever the reader has brought to their encounter with a real writer. So I'll call this review the quick and the truth, and hope you readers who actually read every word, and think about what you read, will find this book, this writer, this flickering light in the darkness -- and rejoice.A story like this once was called a novel, and if there were more than one, connected but with each virtually complete, a cycle. So here's Uvi's cycle. Start anywhere. Start here, with "The Music of Us."

Weatherly When I learned of Book Three of the family saga, Still Life with Memories by Uvi Poznansky I couldn’t wait to delve into, The Music of Us.The author always delivers rich, multidimensional characters. Book 3 gives readers a fascinating prequel to a time when Lenny and Natasha first met, he a young Marine and she a virtuoso pianist.Lenny met Natasha while she performed on base and fell head over heels for her.The author takes us into the lives of these principal characters Lenny and Natasha. It drew me into the lives of both. Most of the story took place during WWII, a time my parents met and began their life together. The author did an excellent job researching events and history of the period.Early in the story one of Lenny’s friends receives orders to Hawaii. Not long after that the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. The narrative weaves a tight interchange of scenes. I found myself wanting them to come together. Each has likable traits with obstacles to overcome. Uvi Poznansky writes with poetic artistry. That generation has been called the Greatest Generation for the sacrifices they made and their amazing accomplishments in later years. If you enjoy historical fiction with a touch of romance. If you enjoy believable, complex characters, this is a book for you.The Music of Us (Still Life with Memories Book 3)

That is, until Emmy finds a piece of evidence he can't afford to ignore. More murders are reported by the day--and they're all inexplicable. No motives, no murder weapons, no suspects. Could one person really be responsible for these unthinkable crimes?INVISIBLE is James Patterson's scariest, most chilling stand-alone thriller yet.

By Bruce from LA All these reviews that attempt to compare past and current James Patterson novels are a bit misguided. Patterson does NOT write more than a dozen major novels a year with only some minimal assistance from numerous journeymen co-authors. If anything it is the other way around. Patterson, as described by some of his co-authors, acts primarily as a mentor and editor to help shape the works which they bring to him and then help promote them in exchange for co-credit. That's fine....that's good business apparently....but the basic book is not Patterson's so trying to compare it to his previous solo works is largely irrelevant. Yes, he does have some input and he makes sure the basics are all there as well some of the key elements he knows are important from experience but he is not the primary writer on these co-op novels. That said, each co-authored novel should best be reviewed on it's own merits with little or no regard for Patterson's previous work. In this case I found the story and characters to be compelling and worth the ride, albeit a bit over the top when it comes to plot twists. My recommendation is to read it and enjoy it but only if your willingness to suspend your disbelief is nearly unlimited and you don't feel the need to exercise much critical judgement or common sense. But, hey it's just a novel so why get too picky, right?

Another disappointment from James Patterson By Jeannine I've been a James Patterson fan since I was in college (over 15 years ago), so I'd like to think I'm well versed with all things James Patterson, from the Alex Cross series, Michael Bennett & Woman's Murder Club to his stand alone books. I've probably read 90% of everything he's ever written in the thriller genre. Although I have to say the last 3 years (in my opinion) his novels have seriously fell off. They've become too predictable, a little boring and just not what I'm used to reading when it comes to James Patterson. I feel that with his introduction into the children's arena for writing, his adult thrillers have suffered. Or maybe it's the co-authors he's been collaborating with I don't know. You can't tell that from his continued best sellers, but for those who truly cherish the original writings of James Patterson like The Quickie, Kiss the Girls, You've Been Warned, Honeymoon, Don't Blink, Sail, etc., his latest novels are no comparison in suspense, intrigue or originality. I was very disappointed...yet again.

In my opinion, the main character, Emmy, was never really developed. Neither was her relationship was Books. It's as if Patterson threw a vague past relationship in there to fill space, certainly not to engage the reader. As the story progressed, I I feel the part of Graham was much better written than the detective side of the story. (Sad when you are pulling for the killer.), And, don't get me started on ending. No spoiler alert here because there isn't much to spoil. It is as if Mr. Patterson had to rush off to dinner so he slapped some crap down and called the story "done". I know James Patterson's novels are no great works of fiction, but I would think, he expected more from himself and his readers. This wasn't even what I would call a good "summer read" or a "beach book". I like a book that makes me feel even a slight bit different when I'm finished. One that makes me "think". Invisible just made me think I had wasted my time and money.

A secret chamber.A mysterious shipwreck.A murder in the desolate salt marshes.A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more complicated-and sinister-than Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast ever could have anticipated.Pendergast, together with his ward Constance Greene, travels to the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar, they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche that once held a crumbling skeleton. Pendergast and Constance soon learn that Exmouth is a town with a very dark and troubled history, and this skeleton may be only the first hint of an ancient transgression, kept secret all these years. But they will discover that the sins of the past are still very much alive. Local legend holds that during the 1692 witch trials in Salem, the real witches escaped, fleeing north to Exmouth and settling deep in the surrounding salt marshes, where they continued to practice their wicked arts. Then, a murdered corpse turns up in the marshes. The only clue is a series of mysterious carvings. Could these demonic symbols bear some relation to the ancient witches' colony, long believed to be abandoned?A terrible evil lurks beneath the surface of this sleepy seaside town-one with deep roots in Exmouth's grim history. And it may be that Constance, with her own troubled past, is the only one who truly comprehends the awful danger that she, Pendergast, and the residents of Exmouth must face . . .

Two-thirds of a decent novel By TChris New York has been depressingly free of serial murders, but a stolen wine collection in New England gets Pendergast’s attention -- or, rather, the opportunity to earn a rare bottle of wine as a fee gets his investigative juices flowing. Of course, the investigation quickly reveals a more serious crime, one that inspires allusions to Poe. And of course, murders and mutilated corpses soon follow, giving Pendergast the chance to probe the kind of weirdness he relishes.Constance Greene plays Watson to Pendergast’s Sherlock. I’m not sure what Constance sees in Pendergast (perhaps she admires his ability to move “like a snake” with “feline grace,” “more nimble than any bullfighter,” and with the “uncanny ability to move without sound”), but her burgeoning desire for him plays a key role in the story. Also playing a role is the dark history of Massachusetts. Shipwrecks, economic downturns in the whaling industry, troubled race relations, and the Salem witch trials are among the historical tidbits that contribute to the plot. Local legends of witchcraft and ghosts of sailors lost at sea add a supernatural element that is customary in Pendergast novels.Pendergast’s investigation introduces him to several residents in a small New England town. Those characters are crafted with the authors’ usual deft touch. As always, the story moves at a good pace, occasionally enlivened by fights and other action scenes.Pendergast is a pretentious sun-of-a-gun and therefore not always the most likable of protagonists, but in Crimson Shore his pretensions are less overbearing than usual. I always like the prose and the plot in these novels more than I like Pendergast, but touches of humor soften his disagreeable nature during the novel’s first half.Pendergast takes advantage of his ability to see into the past, a superpower disguised as meditation that has always seemed a little odd in these novels, although it is certainly a convenient way to solve crime. Shouldn’t Pendergast’s Sherlockian deductive ability be enough to carry the plot? The story seems to reach a conclusion with nearly a third of the book remaining. At that point it branches off in a new and, I thought, less satisfying direction. That was a bit disappointing to me (it pushed the boundaries of credibility almost as much as Pendergast’s ability to see the past) but other readers may well have a different reaction. The ending is unresolved and is clearly meant to set up the next novel, which always strikes me as a cheap way to sell more books. On the whole, I liked the first two-thirds of the story and I always enjoy the authors’ prose, but Crimson Shore isn’t one of my favorite entries in the series. I am giving it 4 stars since I liked it, but it is a weak 4 stars.

The first two-thirds of Crimson Shore were absolutely fantastic - the rest is awkward and forced By Bob Milne The first two-thirds of Crimson Shore were absolutely fantastic – the very definition of a page-turner. The Poe-esque hidden burial chamber, they mystery of the lost shipwreck, the terror of the mud flats and salt marshes, the forgotten community of Salem witches, and the creepiness of small town America all combined to provide the perfect Agent Pendergast story. It had plenty of atmosphere, a legitimate mystery, some dark humor, and even a bit of awkward romance.Fully healed and completely recovered from his last few adventures, Pendergast is once again the fascinatingly enigmatic man-in-black with whom we are most familiar. His eccentricities are on fully display, and his Holmesian knack for reading people is on point once again. While never quite infallible, the almost superhuman aspect of his character is back, both mentally and physically. At the same time, Constance Greene is quickly developing into a leading character in her own right. She’s been displaying more personality in each book, but here she really steps into an investigative arc of her own. Her total lack of social skills, combined with her almost psychotic rage, is a perfect contrast to Pendergast’s polish and perfection. What’s more, Constance has the opportunity here to be part of two equally awkward romantic entanglements. The weird sort of crush that Sergeant Gavin has on her is perfectly understandable, even if it does go completely off the rails later on. Far more interesting, however, is her romantic tension with Pendergast, a scenario that manages to be both sad and amusing. As for the final third of the book, it’s as awkward and forced as anything Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have ever written. It honestly feels as if they reached the climax, realized the story wasn’t long enough, and decided to tack on some supernatural adventure. What’s unfortunate is that it really could have worked, if only they’d made an effort to better integrate it with the rest of the plot. Yes, it's connected, and the false end of the original subplot is important to Constance's character, but the narrative link is tenuous, at best. As a standalone novella, I rather enjoyed it, but in the context of the rest of the story it felt tacked on, rushed, and (worst of all) artificially constructed to allow for another Pendergast-is-in-peril cliffhanger endings.Maddeningly uneven, Crimson Shore is one of those books that I loved . . . and then hated . . . and then enjoyed somewhat ironically . . . and then just became exasperated with. I wish I could be as unreservedly enthusiastic about is as some advance readers, but it’s one structural edit away from being a truly solid Pendergast adventure.

29 of 31 people found the following review helpful. and have always loved every novel By Justin E. Powell I have been a fan of the Pendergast series from The Relic, and have always loved every novel. This one seemed thrown together and not well though-out. It almost seems as if it were only meant to be a book to reintroduce a character, and not really a stand-alone novel. It's a shame we waited a year for this to come out, and it read like it was intended as a bridge. Disappointing.

Roxie Sunshine Hardy is perfectly happy living in Philadelphia, far away from her hometown. Growing up as a chubby nerd obsessed with classic literature, Roxie finally feels like she’s found her place in the world. She’s kept her full name a secret and has never, ever, ever told a single soul how she spent her high school years. People might think growing up in a family bakery is delightful, but Roxie knows the reality. Spending countless sweaty afternoons inside Sunshine Bakery’s big, pink foam cupcake costume is the stuff of her nightmares. Those terrible days are behind her now, but when her family needs her, Roxie decides to return to Natchitoches. She assures herself that it’s only for a few weeks, and there isn’t a snowball’s chance in Dante’s Inferno that she’ll have to get into that cupcake suit. Moving from New York City to Natchitoches shouldn’t be a problem for Andy McBride. The slower pace, Creole culture, and friendly locals make up for the lack of any good Thai take-out. But Andy hasn’t counted on how much he’d miss his brother, Mark. He can’t uproot Mark from his group home for the mentally disabled back in New York, so Andy tries to go on as usual. To everyone else, including his fascinating neighbor from Philly, he’s living the carefree life of a wealthy bachelor, but Andy is haunted by the knowledge that Mark might not be around for much longer. While book two remains my favorite, part way through this book I asked my husband if we could go to Louisiana over spring break. Maybe find a town that has Creole food that we could try. I live in a bordering state so it wasn’t a completely unreasonable request. The author did a good job of depicting the town, the characters and the food.

This may be a new favorite of mine. I always thought she could never top her Austen series, but this series is SO WONDERFUL! If you loved the other Cane River books, you will love the story of Andy and Roxie. Andy is a man caring for his handicapped brother who avoids serious dating like the plague. Roxie is a girl with a big heart, helping her grandmother in her bakery. The poor dear ends up almost baking herself while working in a pink cupcake costume all the time in the steamy southern heat. How can we not adore her? Bless her heart! I am pretty sure I wanted to scream, that I cried, and that I laughed a lot while reading this one. A definite perk is that we get to spend a lot of time with some of our loved "people" from other books in the series in this novel. We also get to revisit one of my favorite places, Alice's bookstore, Buy the Book. Any book lover will love this place... and Baby A's tees! And while we always get to see our "friends" from other books, one has to love that these books can still be read as a stand alone. ;) A Star to Steer by is a beautifully crafted, romantic read!

I have all the Cane River romances on my Kindle, and I look forward to revisiting Natchitoches, Louisiana, especially Alice's bookstore, By the Book, and now the Sunshine Bakery.I love Hathaway's characters. They're not perfect, they have flaws, and they're utterly human. Andy is concerned about his mentally handicapped older brother Mark. Roxie suffers humiliation in a sweltering cupcake costume every day she helps her mamere with her bakery. Andy doesn't think he should have a special someone (for a reason you'll find out if you read this), and Roxie, at first, wasn't all that crazy about life in Natchitoches. One of my favorite parts in the Cane River books are all the literary references. Alice and Paul's little girl, Aurora, wears lines from classic literature on her tiny baby t-shirts. Quotes from poetry spout up with great abandon, particularly in this one. Dante is frequently mentioned, and I loved all of it. Hathaway's characters are sharp and smart, intellectual and intelligent. I love living life with them.**crossposted to Goodreads**
