By Renee This is the story of Samantha Foley, traveling west with her parents to start a new life. They have purchased property, along with most of the other travelers in their wagon train, all partnering with the leader of that train. Along the way Samantha’s mother falls ill and dies, leaving only Samantha and her father to continue the journey. Shortly after her mother passes, while on a hunting trip to find food for the travelers, Samantha’s father falls from his horse and is dragged to his death.Samantha vows to carry on and reach their original destination and make a life for herself. Her fellow travelers’ do not approve of her traveling alone and try to force her to marry an elderly gentlemen in the train, also traveling alone. When Samantha refuses to marry the old man she is banned from the wagon train and left with only the clothes on her back, a small amount of food, and a canteen of water. While following the train through the mountains a bad winter storm blows in and Samantha is left alone to die.Mountain fur trapper Patrick McCrery comes upon Samantha lying in the snow. Nearly frozen, he takes her to his cabin to warm her and take care of her until she is strong enough to take to the nearest town to continue on her journey. Patrick is a very solitary man, and likes his life that way, for good reason. The mountain winter has several surprises in store for Samantha and Patrick, both good and bad, and their limits will be tried and tested on more than one occasion. Both Samantha and Patrick are very strong characters and you are immediately immersed in their story. They have both been through many trials in their lives and at times they appear to crumble, but always bounce back, fighting for what they believe in and eventually for their future. The story ebbs and flows smoothly while bringing the characters emotions to life. There were times when I wanted to string Patrick up from the nearest tree, then he’d seem to redeem himself, and Samantha would start to come apart. I felt every emotion throughout this book, fear, hope, joy, sorrow, they are all there, wonderfully expressed by the author. The secondary characters are also very well written and add a lot of interest to the story, keeping it moving to it’s conclusion. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Historical Western Romance, you will not be disappointed.

But, wait, here comes an abandoned boy., a pregnant Indian, discrimination, and bad guys. This book is dizzying. You can hardly keep up with It. There is enough for at least 2 stories here. The man in the story is Patrick who is part Indian and a trapper. He lives alone until he finds Samantha in the woods freezing. The boy they find is Brian.. Brian is a big part of the story because many of the deisions made after his arrival deal with his welfare.Violet Flower is the pregnant indian and her story deserves a separate book.. Thiis addition to Patrick and Samantha's. story brings an unnecessary catalyst. Samantha and Patrick are at odds enough. Discrimination deserves a part in this story. A woman and a part Indian man would raise eyebrows if they were seen together in this particular time period.. Patrick has been under scrutiny from the whole town all his life. Samantha is branded because of her association with him. She is considered a woman with loose morals. Its heartbreaking to see a decent girl being horribly treated.Bad guys have a place in the story when you have 2 characters found in the snow and freezing cold. This is a romance at heart. You may have to work through a whole mess of things to get to the real story which is Patrick and Samantha. If you are willing, you might like the story
