Seven California High School Seniors were in detention when the lights went out, the ceiling collapsed, and they were trapped in overturned desks and the debris. They struggled in the cave like darkness of the basement classroom, choking on the dust. This was not an earthquake, but a Nuclear Attack. David Phelps swallowed his panic. He knew they would have to work together to escape from the rubble. Then they would have to shelter for fourteen days to survive the fallout. He struggled to remember what his Dad, an Air Force Officer, had taught him about Nuclear War. If, as he feared, their parents were dead, then they should trek east. Hopefully they would stay together. David was disappointed with this dysfunctional group. But you go to Nuclear War with the survivors you have, he realized. They would have to adapt, improvise, and overcome.Or die. They did not know, or like, each other. The teenagers were together only because they had been sentenced to detention.Everything suddenly changed when they rescued a four year old orphan and his dog. Now they were the parents. Seven teenagers, on seven different paths, are thrown together despite their cultural and religious differences that they thought never mattered. They must make not only survival decisions, but spiritual choices as they struggle against an enemy who demands either religious conversion, or beheading. This is an incredible journey of survival, and personal choice. They became the Nuclear War Club.

Each of the seven primary characters are well-defined and there are never problems distinguishing them from each other2. The story shows that teenagers are adaptable. They find themselves in the aftermath of a nuclear attack, they identify the one person among them who has the information to survive, and they follow his direction. Usually teenagers are depicted as petty, with infighting and jealousy, but these kids are smart and each one has unique talents that helps the group survive.3. The characters from the US Armed Services are portrayed positively. Sometimes, in post-apocalyptic books, they go rogue, which I hate.4. There is some good information about surviving a nuclear attack and about prepping for disasters.5. The group is willing to take in additional members instead of considering everyone else a threat.6. There are very human interactions and relationships that show these teenagers are still teenagers--they have crushes on each other, they wonder about their futures, they do stupid things (take drugs), and they sometimes question the decisions being made by their leaders. Usually, though, they are a cohesive group, struggling to stay alive together.7. They never lose hope, even though they have lost everything and everyone they've ever known.8. When faced with seemingly insurmountable situations, they use their brains to invent things to survive. Some of their inventions are brilliant. On the negative side:1. As others have described, there are a lot of typos, missing words, incorrect character references, etc.2. Nuclear war doesn't seem so horrific. Yes, they see some dead bodies and they get sick from radiation, but there are no firestorm or blast waves and a lot of buildings/infrastructure seem to remain in usable condition.3. At the beginning, Karen is the only one who knows how to shoot well, but then, all of a sudden, they are all great shots. They also seem to have no problems finding weapons and ammo and they are experts in battle tactics. How did this occur? Yes, they use each other's natural talents, but you don't become expert marksmen and soldiers overnight.4. They never seem to have problems finding water and food. This may be because they are smart and follow the rails instead of the roads, but it seems highly unlikely they would always have something to eat.5. We never find out who attacked the US or who the "green" terrorists are. It probably doesn't matter because the story is about how the kids survive.6. The kids become very religious/spiritual and pray a lot for help. The religious stuff isn't overbearing, but in stories like these I always have to ask, "Why do they still turn to God when God just allowed their world to be destroyed?" It's not logical, but I guess faith never is.I did like the story even though there are some holes in it. The characters are positively portrayed and learn (somehow) to survive. I'm going to have to go with three stars though because some things are just too unbelievable and convenient and there are a lot of grammatical and typographical errors. I think a good proofreading/copy editing can fix the grammar problems and a few extra scenes can be added to show how they become such strategic experts in a short time.

I was so wrong! It is an intricate story about survival . The characters are so real, and for those of us who work with teens, yes, they really are very smart. They have grown up with the entire world of knowledge at their fingertips. I hope to read many more stories by this author and thank you for reminding all of us that without God there is no survival.

Great character development and the storyline has more twist and turns than a kite string. I hope this is not the last book in this storyline - there is so much potential for additional stories. So, read, learn, and save a little food.
