Moby-Dick: or, The Whale (A Penguin Classics Hardcover), by Herman Melville

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-Opening with the classic line, "Call me Ishmael," the narrator's New England accent adds a touch of authenticity to this sometimes melodramatic presentation. The St. Charles Players do a credible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. This adaptation retains a good measure of Melville's dialogue and key passages which afford listeners a vivid connection with the lengthy novel. Background music and appropriate sound effects enhance the telling of the story about Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the malevolent white whale. The cassettes are clearly marked, and running times are noted on each side of the tapes. Announcements at the beginning of each side and a subtle chime signal at the end make it easy to follow the story, but a stereo player must be used to hear some dialogue. The lightweight cardboard package is inadequate for circulation. Done in a radio theatre format, the recording does a nice job of introducing the deeper themes of the book and covering the major events. For school libraries that support an American literature curriculum, this recording offers a different interpretation of an enduring classic.Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library. Rocky Hill, CT Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In a sense, this work is the piece de resistance of the textual revolution in American scholarship of the past generation. The first half is the final MLA "Approved Text" of the classic novel, prepared under the auspices of the Center for Editions of American Authors. The second half consists of an Historical Note detailing background, genetic composition, publication, and ensuing critical reception; a discussion of its textual history; and some relevant marginalia. The work is not only thorough and rigorous, but, considering the scholarly grittiness of the endeavor, surprisingly lucid and graceful in its exposition. Highly recommended for special collections. 367 of 381 people found the following review helpful. your understanding might boil down to the quality of the gloss By Caraculiambro Unless you are a naval historian or a Melville scholar, you probably won't have a rewarding (or even comprehensible) time with Moby-Dick at this remove unless the edition you're using comes with a good set of footnotes. Here's the skinny on the various editions currently on shelves:THESE HAVE FOOTNOTES ON THE PAGE ITSELF:* Charles Feidelson, Jr.'s annotated edition. Unquestionably the most all-around useful edition of Moby-Dick ever printed. Generous and highly useful footnotes right on the page, covering lexical, allusional, and cross-referential items. Two disadvantages: you may at times feel put upon by Feidelson's interlarded interpretations, and the thing is totally out of print. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1964. ISBN: 067260311X* The "Norton critical" edition, edited by Parker and Hayford. The edition most widely employed by scholars. Stingier with the footnotes than Feidelson, but still a good second choice. Many useful essays at the end. The layout of the text is a bit hard on the eye, though. Make sure you get the SECOND edition, from 2001. ISBN: 0393972836* The "Barnes and Noble Classics" edition. The footnotes for the most part are skimpy and confined to obscure vocabulary, not cultural and literary allusions. ISBN: 1-59308-018-2THESE HAVE A FOOTNOTES SECTION IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK:* The "Oxford World Classics" edition. About 11 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-19-283385-5* The "Modern Library" edition. About 13 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-679-78327-X* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-24.3724-7 (This is their fancy hardbound version: see next item.)* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-03.9084-7 (This is their paperback edition, which looks totally different but is exactly the same as the previous entry. This claims to be the "definitive text," but any such claim is spurious -- cf. Hayford and Parker [v.s.] for a good discussion of why. Penguin previously came out with an identical-looking but much thicker version annotated by Harold Beaver: the notes for that edition were copious, but on the whole too fanciful and self-indulgent to be of much use.)* The "Library of America" edition. (This is the one included in the same volume with "Redburn" and "White Jacket.") About 9 pp. of notes at the end. Unfortunately, they're a bit skimpy. You see, they're of the "go get it yourself" kind. For example, when Melville writes, "send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger," the footnotes -- the incidence of which is not marked in the running text -- merely says "Luke 16:24". In other words, you've got to look it up yourself. So I would characterize the footnotes as sparse and taciturn: they'll clue you in to the source, but as for the exact wording of something and its accumulated historical connotations, you've got to come up with those yourself. ISBN: 0-940450-09-7THESE HAVE NO FOOTNOTES WHATSOEVER:Why do publishers still print editions of Moby Dick without any footnotes or glossary whatsoever? Who can read it? What a waste of paper. I get so irritated! In any event, the following publishers have decided you'd prefer your white whale raw:* The "Bantam Classic" edition. ISBN: 0-553-21311-3 Ain't got jack.* The "Everyman's Library" edition. ISBN: 0-679-40559-3. Zilch.* The "Penguin 150th Anniversary" edition. ISBN: 0-14-20.0008-6 Bupkiss! Handsome, though.* The "Arion Press" edition. ISBN: 0-520-04354-5. Also annoyingly oversized. And that's my bit of altruism for the week.

It was a gruelling read, but---in the end---completely worthwhile.I've been reading it for 6 months. I started over the summer, during an abroad program in Oxford, and I remember sitting outside reading when one of the professors came over, saw what I was reading, and said: "It's a very strange book, isn't it?"Looking back, that might be the best way to describe it. The blurb from D.H. Lawrence on the back cover agrees: Moby Dick "commands a stillness in the soul, an awe...[it is] one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world."Now there are those who will say that the book's middle is unbearable---with its maddeningly detailed accounts of whaling. Part of me agrees. That was the hardest to get through. But, still, even the most dull subject offers Melville an opportunity to show off his writing chops. He's a fantastic writer---his text most resembles that of Shakespeare. And, like one Shakespeare's characters, Melville sees all the world as a stage. Consider this beautiful passage from the first chapter:"Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnifient parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces--though I cannot tell why this was exactly; yet, now that I recall all the circumstances, I think I can see a little into the springs and motives which being cunningly presented to me under various disguises, induced me to set about performing the part I did, besides cajoling me into the delusion that it was a choice resulting from my own unbiased freewill and discriminating judgment."The end of "Moby Dick" informs the rest of the book, and in doing so makes rereading it inevitable. It is telling that Moby Dick doesn't appear until page 494. It is telling, because, the majority of the book is spent in anticipation---in fact, the whole book is anticipation. It's not unlike sex, actually---delaying gratification to a point of almost sublime anguish. What comes at the book's end, then, is mental, physical, and spiritual release (as well as fufillment). The book leaves you with questions both large and small. I was actually most troubled with this question---What happened to Ishmael? No, we learn his fate at the book's end, but where was he throughout it? We all know how it starts---"Call me Ishmael"---and the book's first few chapters show him interacting with Queequeg and an innkeeper. But then we lose him onboard the Pequod---we never see him interact with anyone. No one ever addresses him. He seems to witness extremely private events---conferences in the Captain's quarters, conversations aboard multiple boats, and--what can only be his conjecture--the other characters' internal dialogue. Is he a phantom? What is he that he isn't? Somehow I think this question masks a much larger and more important one.Try "Moby Dick." Actually, don't try it---read it. Work at it. Like lifting weights a bit heavier than you're used to, "Moby Dick" will strengthen your brain muscle. Don't believe those who hate it, they didn't read it. They didn't work at it. Be like Ishmael, who says: "I try all things; I achieve what I can." Or, more daringly, be like Ahab, whose ambition is his curse, but whose curse propels and writes the book itself.

262 of 274 people found the following review helpful. Open your mind By TJ Last year I decided to expand my intellectual horizons by reading a series of American literary classics. Moby Dick was the first book on my list. It took me three months to finish this legendary story and, looking back on it now, I must say that it was worth every minute. To others who are considering this effort I say this: buttress your stamina and open your mind. This is not John Grisham or Tom Clancy. You will be reading high literature and you will be required to think. If you do so, Ishmael, Ahab and crew will open a window to some of mankind's most profound questions: Is it better to fight evil or promote virtue? Where is the line between honorable justice and blind vengeance? Do bad things happen because the universe is evil or just indifferent? The true pleasure to be derived from reading this book can be found by closing its pages every so often and reflecting on the questions that it will raise in your mind. A completely different experience than breezing through the latest best-seller, but much more rewarding.Be aware that Moby Dick is many types of books in one. It is part adventure story, part sermon, part history of whaling, part encyclopedia of whale anatomy, part metaphysical allegory. Expect it to change periodically as you move through it, be receptive to each part, and don't try to compartmentalize it as any one particular type of work.

I connected with the characters, and I felt their pain, their joy, and their sadness. I cannot wait for the sequel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Spirituality, nature and the issues of domestic violence By Cheryl M-M This book was a mixed bag of nuts. It seemed as if the writer wanted to approach various serious issues and at the same time write a book that connected the soul to spirituality. I don't think it mixed as well as it could have, because there was too much going on. In fact it seemed as if two frames of mind were writing at the same time, the spiritual deep one and the comtemporary one. The contemporary voice broached issues of abuse against both genders and the spiritual voice took us on a journey of Native American naturistic soul searching. I felt the dialogue in the more modern storyline was too cliched and lacked the same depth as the spiritual storyline. I received a free copy of this book for my review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mixed bag By Vandernise1 I received a complimentary copy of this book in order toreview it.There is an awful lot going on in this book. I wanted to love it, but I did at least like it quite a bit. This is the story of Callie and Ethan, and Callie and Snake, and Callie and Yellow Feather, and Snake and Yellow Feather, and Ethan and Rachel. It's all very complex and complicated. But the story is well written. The author delves into Native American lore quite well despite the obvious fact that she is a Brit. There were quite a few colloquial references that gave her away, but other than that she did a great job of storytelling. The story went off in so many directions, all of them interesting by themselves, that this is more of an epic tale. We get a little bit of everything: Historical romance, contemporary romance, action, adventure, mystery, thriller, new age introspection. Some of the characters are so unlikeable that they're likeable. There were a few points where I wanted to say "Wrap it up, already!" but overall, it was an enjoyable distraction. I would read this author again.

From the Author Here's what real readers are saying about Faye Sonya books : Brides of El Paso Book3The Doctor's Flawed Bride with a Lisp Writer's a litter different from the other authors I have been reading. She has a very good story and keeps your interest up. ~ Peggy Primavera .Mail Order Brides of Western Romance Book3 The Deaf Bride and The Sensible Teacher  . It touch me so much because it's about deaf just like myself. I'm deaf also it showed that we can do anything for being deaf. Thank Faye Sonja for great writing a stories of handicapped and etc. ~ Doxiesmom3  Bride of Perry Lake Book1The Big Feisty Bride tamed by Her Scarred Banker I actually really enjoyed this book and I'm very interested in the fact that it's the first in a series. The author did a great job of making the characters relatable. The story itself shone, especially because it was romantic and sweet, and also a clean romance. The other thing I liked was that it wasn't predictable, which made the story an enjoyable read. ~ Cassandra The Archer Sisters of Goldrush Book1  ADELINE - The Strong-willed Bride for Her Lonely Farmer  This was an entertaining short story for a sunny afternoon. Adeline is a little more strong willed than what makes a really likable character for me, but James is a keeper. All in all Addie and James' story encourages me to move on to Amelia's story (2) and then Averil's (3), too when it's completed at the end of this month. ~ J. Smith..Three Brides for Three War Comrades Book2  Ashamed, Beaten & Saved by Her Burned Hero This the second story of the series was as good as the first, now I am looking forward to reading the last story of the series. ~ Jilm

It takes a woman with strong Christian faith to step out on such a pursuit for her love. .It is Faye's desire that readers will once again have the courage to believe in love again from reading her books, to be inspired through the characters in her story who through perseverance, in the face of obstacles, overcame the hurdles using that simple faith and belief of theirs.

The characters are likeable and the stories are always heartwarming. This particular set follows three sisters going thru the process of getting used to married life. I enjoyed all of them, including the bonus book. One thing that bothers me however, are the continued spelling and grammatical errors in the books. But that doesn't detract from the story. These books are perfect for a rainy day read.I received a copy of these books for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.

If you are a fan of historical romance that is clean with a mail order bride you should enjoy it. There are some editing errors, but I didn't get too distracted with them. I spell checked a few words to make sure I was correct in thinking some words were spelled wrong, but I still enjoyed the story.Addie and James are good characters and I believe the other sisters and husbands will be good also. I really enjoyed the time period the story was set in and the fact that Addie finds the solution to a problem by becomming a mail order bride. I plan to purchase and read the next books in this series.

Laurie Moran listened as the teenager in front of her practiced her high school French. She was on line at Bouchon, the newly opened French bakery that was around the corner from her Rockefeller Center office. “Jay voo-dray un pan chocolate. Make that deux.” The cashier smiled patiently as she waited for the young woman to string together her next request. Clearly she was accustomed to these clumsy attempts by customers to practice their French, even though the bakery was in the heart of New York City. Laurie wasn’t feeling quite as patient. She was meeting with her boss, Brett Young, later this morning and still hadn’t decided which story to pitch first for her show’s next special. She needed as much time as possible to prepare. After a final “mare sea,” the girl left, a box of pastries in hand. Laurie was next. “I’ll be ordering in anglais, s’il vous plaît.” “Merci,” the woman said fervently. It had become a tradition that on Friday mornings she would stop at the bakery and bring in special treats for her staff—her assistant, Grace Garcia, and her assistant producer, Jerry Klein. They were grateful for the selection of tarts, croissants, and breads. After she placed the order, the cashier asked if she cared for anything else. The macarons looked delicious. Maybe just a few for Dad and Timmy after dinner, she promised herself, and as a treat for me if today’s meeting with Brett goes well. •  •  • As she stepped from the elevator on the sixteenth floor of 15 Rockefeller Center, she realized how the layout of the Fisher Blake Studios offices reflected the success of her work this past year. She used to be in a small windowless office, sharing an assistant with two other producers, but since she had created a true crime–based “news special” focusing on cold cases, Laurie’s career had taken off. Now she had a long row of windows in a spacious office filled with sleek, modern furnishings. Jerry had been promoted to assistant producer and occupied a smaller office next door. And Grace kept more than busy in a large open space just outside. The three of them now worked full-time on their show, Under Suspicion, freeing them from other run-of-the-mill news programming. Grace had recently turned twenty-seven but looked even younger. Laurie had been tempted more than once to tell Grace she didn’t need to wear all of the makeup she meticulously applied every day, but clearly Grace preferred a personal style quite different from Laurie’s classic tastes. Today, she wore a multicolored silk tunic over impossibly slim leggings, with five-inch platform boots. Her long black hair was pulled into an I Dream of Jeannie topknot, teased into a perfect fountain. Usually Grace lunged for the bakery bag, but today she did not. “Laurie,” she began slowly. “Something wrong, Grace?” Laurie knew her assistant well enough to recognize when she was upset. Just as Grace was about to explain, Jerry stepped out of his office. Standing between Jerry’s long, lanky frame and Grace in her sky-high heels always made Laurie feel short, even though she was a slender five-foot-seven. Jerry held up both palms. “There’s a lady sitting in your office. She just showed up. I told Grace to schedule an appointment for her at some other time. For the record, I had nothing to do with this.”

Branfield All Dressed in White is the latest addition to Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke’s Under Suspicion mystery series. In this outing, the cast and crew of the cold case TV show are profiling the unsolved disappearance of a bride who vanished five years earlier.Television producer Laurie Moran is about to pitch her latest ideas for the next episode in her popular television show when Sandra Pierce drops by her office in hopes of convincing Laurie to feature her missing daughter’s case. Dubbed the Runaway Bride, Amanda Pierce vanished without a trace the day before her destination wedding and no one has seen or heard from her again. Despite a thorough investigation, the police could not say with any certainty that foul play was involved in her disappearance, but Sandra remains convinced Amanda’s fiancé Jeff Hunter murdered her for financial gain. Once all of the members of the wedding party and Amanda’s family agree to participate in the show, Laurie, along with her cast and crew, head to Palm Beach to reenact the events leading up to Amanda’s disappearance in hopes of solving the case.Laurie is no stranger to losing a loved one to murder and she understands better than anyone Sandra’s need for answers about her daughter’s disappearance. Laurie’s preliminary research supports the theory that Amanda did not leave under her own volition but with a plethora of suspects, which includes not only Jeff, but his current wife (and Amanda’s best friend) Meghan White, and Amanda’s sister Charlotte, Laurie still has a lot of work ahead of her. New clues emerge after reviewing the security footage from the hotel, but there is still very little evidence as to the perpetrator’s identity. During the course of the investigation, it also becomes apparent there are several members of the wedding party who are harboring secrets they are reluctant to have revealed. The pool of suspects is vast and the information that Laurie uncovers does not help narrow down her list or their possible reason for murdering Amanda. Jeff is a natural suspect since he stood to gain a vast fortune in the event of Amanda’s death. His rather quick marriage to Meghan also paints him in an unflattering light but does that also make him a killer? Meghan also falls under suspicion considering her marriage to Jeff but Laurie also discovers the two women were quarreling in the days leading up to Amanda’s disappearance. Close friend Kate Fulton is afraid a secret she is keeping will be exposed but does this have any bearing on what happened to Amanda? Jeff’s groomsmen are obnoxious and seemingly harmless but their actions are also closely scrutinized throughout the investigation. A surprise suspect emerges after the wedding photographer remembers his assistant was not initially questioned after Amanda’s disappearance. News about the murder of a student from the same campus where several of the key players attended college piques Laurie’s interest but is there any connection between that long ago homicide and Amanda’s case?Intricately plotted with a fantastic cast of characters, All Dressed in White is a cleverly written whodunit. This engaging and fast-paced mystery will stymie readers as Laurie and her team investigate their latest cold case in hopes of discovering the truth about what happened to missing bride Amanda Pierce. Another excellent collaboration from Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke that old and new fans of the Under Suspicion series are sure to love.I received a complimentary copy for review.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Everyone's under suspicion on this reality show By Paul Mastin Mary Higgins Clark, best-selling author of dozens of mystery novels, has recently teamed up with Alafair Burke for a new series, the Under Suspicion novels. In the second title, All Dressed in White, the titular TV show, Under Suspicion, features the cold case of the Runaway Bride. Five years ago a wealthy bride-to-be disappeared from the resort where her elaborate destination wedding was to take place in mere hours. No body ever turned up, but the mother of the bride had never given up searching for her. The groom, on the other hand, married the missing bride's best friend two short years later. The reality TV show gathers the family and wedding party together at the same resort, revisiting the scene, asking hard questions, and seeking answers that investigators never were able to find. Clark and Burke cleverly build the story through the show's interviews with the friends and family, and with carefully placed conversations and interactions. Like any good mystery, they spread the suspicion around liberally, but carefully conceal the identity of the real culprit to the very end. (If I read more mystery novels, or maybe if I were just more clever and/or devious, I probably would have figured it out earlier.)I like the way Clark and Burke tell the story. They include very little action for most of the book. The story is told through the interviews and investigation. Building toward the climax, the action climbs exponentially. I thought of those indoor bike races, where it looks like the races are cruising along easily for most of the race, all keeping a similar pace, until the last little bit where they furiously race to the finish. All Dressed in White is an entertaining, suspenseful read. I enjoyed the Under Suspicion characters and would definitely look forward to meeting them again next time Clark and Burke decided to put their minds together. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

By Brenda Telford Under Suspicion had become very successful in the short time Laurie Moran had been running the show. When searching for their next cold case in the series to investigate, Laurie had been approached by Sandra Pierce, the mother of a young woman who had been touted in the media as “The Runaway Bride" – five years previously Amanda had been with her family and bridal party at The Grand Victoria Hotel in Palm Beach in the days before her big day. Then with only one full day left until the ceremony, Amanda had vanished. As the Under Suspicion team researched and investigated, their preparations took them to the Florida hotel, where they were to recreate the night of Amanda’s disappearance. Even though the members of the original wedding party had moved on with their lives, they had all agreed to come together to try to discover what had happened. Along with Amanda’s fiancé now being married to her best friend, also a member of the wedding party, Laurie could tell the vibes from other people within the group were varied. The jealousy and blame, theories and speculations were intense – Laurie and her team, including host Alex Buckley knew this mystery would deepen; the lies would intensify, before the truth would hopefully be exposed…When I read the first in this series, The Cinderella Murder by author Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke I thoroughly enjoyed it. Book #2, All Dressed in White is another gripping instalment; I’ll be continuing with this series! Filled with twists and turns that lead the reader first one way, then the next; I found I couldn’t put it down. All Dressed in White is a fabulous crime/mystery novel which I have no hesitation in recommending highly.

Two people who have experienced a broken relationship meet at Jack's bar on New Year's Eve; one who has learned to move on and one who hasn't. Drew, tired of studying, goes to Jack's bar for a holiday drink and sees a beautiful, sad looking woman who's trying to hide in a corner, hoping no one comes to talk to her. Sunny has learned to keep a wall around her and not invite anyone in, especially men. But Drew is not one to let that bother him until she completely shuts him down. She realizes that she has been rude to him and others so she makes the attempt to come out of her year long melancholy and take a chance on letting the past go. Robyn Carr's characters are very real and relatable. It was so wonderful for me to go back to the Virgin River community and remember what was so special about that place!

Leads are flawed but wonderfully likable hero and heroine.Carr's love of animals as always is somewhere hidden in the story. Another keeper. Write faster Robyn and please feature some Virgin River characters again. We really feel like they are old friends.
