No refund needed but you'll get the truth By M R Miles I love a good sci-fi romance but the writer couldn't get out their heads long enough to actually write a good story. Yes I know it was in first person but the history lesson got old fast and so did the ramblings of the characters

By ~ Judi ~ The concept of the alien race (Brions) that this author offers is somewhat original.The beginning of the book was a bit boring but I think it somewhat helps the reader to understand the Brion species better and reminds them that they are nothing like humans in the emotions department.Now the love story between Deliya and Darien was okay but not extremely interesting.The story could have been integrated in the second book, "Alien Warrior's Wife" which I also read. The author's writing does get better in the second book for those who complained about her writing in this book. I suggest read the second book as well.It's short like this one but has a much better storyline.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ice Queen meets her match! By Robyn A strong Heroine! Yes! Deliya is a fierce warrior and dedicated soldier for the Brion army. She is caught between the battle on the ground with the Antaris people and her heart. Brion women are as equal as the men. They both have needs in all areas of life, and they do get met. Love is one area that is strangely different and could be met with resistance to appear as an act of desperation. Darien is a chosen warrior of the Commander. Darien is Deliya’s male counterpart. These two together are an amazing couple. They both have passion and desires that flood each other. Does the commander know something they do not? Are they fated mates? Will one slip-up change all of this? The story line is good. Little bit confusing in the beginning. I hope to read more relationship development and not so much battles. Great read from Vi Voxley.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. 3 stars By Karen Talley The premise of this book is excellent but the execution is somewhat lacking. It needs some serious editing such as using the wrong words. Example: they "peaked over Clara's shoulder." Hmm...believe that is peeked. And proofreading would catch mistakes like "He was glancing around at himself." I think in this case it was the scenery he was taking in. Also, some things just didn't ring true to North Dakota in 1922. A character says "You're like, the best writer, ever." Sounds more like Valley Girl speak of a few years ago. And a proper 19 year old living with her boyfriend? Just don't think that would have been allowed. But, I think this writer has a lot of potential. Her ideas are good and she does well with her characters. With the help of a good editor, I think she would create amazing books.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good plot, no follow through. By Erbecky enjoyed the story line. However the plot was very rushed and the characters were not deveolped. The relationship of the main characters were not convincing to me. I did not finish the story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Clean but not great By phenduck The story was short and clean. There was a little romance. The interesting plot should have been developed more. It was not boring, but it was also not fascinating. The most interesting thing was the role reversal: instead of a mail-order bride, there was a mail-order groom. The frequent grammar errors were distracting, and there were several spelling errors; several times the word "bare" was used instead of "bear," and once "bare" was used for "barely." Sentence structure problems and punctuation errors should have been fixed before this book was published. I hope there was no editor; if there was, that editor should be fired.

WOOLF’S FAMOUS ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF FEMALE AUTHORS By Steven H Propp Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English author, essayist, publisher, and writer of short stories, regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 118-page Harper paperback edition.]She begins this 1929 book with the statement, “But, you say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction---what has that got to do with a room of one’s own? I will try to explain… I should never be able to fulfill what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer---to hand you after an hour’s discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece forever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point---a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved.” (Pg. 3-4)She reveals that when she attempted to enter a library to read a manuscript of Thackeray, she was told “that ladies are only admitted to the library if accompanied by a Fellow of the College, or furnished with a letter of introduction. That a famous library has been cursed by a woman is a matter of complete indifference to a famous library. Venerable and calm, with all its treasures safe locked within its breast, it sleeps complacently and will, so far as I am concerned, so sleep for ever. Never again will I wake those echoes, never will I ask for that hospitality again, I vowed as I descended the steps in anger.” (Pg. 7-8)She recalls a professor: “Possibly when the professor insisted a little too emphatically upon the inferiority of women, he was concerned not with their inferiority, but with his own superiority. That was what he was protecting rather hot-headedly and with too much emphasis, because it was a jewel to him of the rarest price… Without self-confidence we are as babes in the cradle. And how can we generate this imponderable quality…? By thinking that other people are inferior to oneself. By feeling that one has some innate superiority---it may be wealth, or rank, a straight nose, or the portrait of a grandfather by Romney---for there is no end to the pathetic devices of the human imagination---over other people.” (Pg. 34-35) She adds, “Under the spell of that illusion… They start the day confident… they say to themselves as they go into the room, I am the superior of half the people here, and it is thus that they speak with that self-confidence, that self-assurance, which have had such profound consequences in public life and lead to such curious mores in the margin of the private mind.” (Pg. 36-37)She rhetorically asks, “it is a perennial puzzle why no woman wrote a word of that extraordinary literature when every other man, it seemed, was capable of song or sonnet. What were the conditions in which women lived, I asked myself.” (Pg. 43) She powerfully points out, “I could not help thinking, as I looked at the works of Shakespeare… that… it would have been impossible … for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare. Let me imagine… what would have happened had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith… She was as adventurous, as imaginative, as agog to see the world as he was. But she was not sent to school. She had no chance of learning grammar and logic… She picked up a book now and then… But then her parents came in and told her to mend the stockings or mind the stew and not moon about books and papers… She had the quickest fancy, a gift like her brother’s, for the tune of words. Like him, she had a taste for the theater. She stood at the stage door; she wanted to act, she said. Men laughed in her face… She could get no training in her craft… That, more or less, is how the story would run … if a woman in Shakespeare’s day had had Shakespeare’s genius…” (Pg. 48-50)She suggests, “[In fiction] All these relationships between women… are too simple. So much has been left out, unattempted… almost without exception they are shown in their relation to men. It is strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen’s day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only in relation to the other sex. And how small a part of a woman’s life is that; and how little can a man know even of that when he observes it through the black or rosy spectacles which sex puts upon his nose.” (Pg. 86)She concludes, “it is far more important at the moment to know how much money women had and how many rooms than to theorize about their capacities… you may object that in all this I have made too much of the importance of material things. Even allowing a generous margin for symbolism, that five hundred a year stands for the power to contemplate, that a lock on the door means the power to think for oneself…” (Pg. 109-110) She adds, “Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom. And women have always been poor… from the beginning of time. Women have had less intellectual freedom than the sons of Athenian slaves. Women, then, have not had a dog’s chance of writing poetry. That is why I have laid so much stress on money and a room of one’s own.” (Pg. 112)This is a profound and always-timely response to the argument, “Why are there no great women poets/writers/scientists/philosophers?” [Of course, since Woolf wrote in 1929, we now HAVE seen women excel in all these areas, so far fewer people will ask such questions.] This is one of Woolf’s fascinating books, and is of great importance for the development of later feminist thought.

It is more a collection of observations, which were important, even radical, a century ago, some are probably timeless and thus still of importance. It improves as it develops more.

This new series By Maisie D Let’s just say I’ve read a lot on Ms Grant’s books and never have I been disappointed! This new series, The Reapers, is an off shoot of The Dragon Kings. A series which I love to death!! This book is a quick read and not a very complex story. But it’s wonderful.The Reapers who are Fae themselves, are the executioners of the Fae, Light and Dark,. If they do something evil or illegal the Reapers are there to carry out justice. This book is about Baylon and Jordyn. As soon as they see each other they know they were destined for each other. They feel it in every fiber of their being! They can’t keep their hands off each other. Baylon knows he’s not allowed to love someone. But… According to Death, who is the founder of the Reapers, no relationships or entanglements are allowed. The last Reaper who fell in love, centuries ago, went wrong and Death killed the Reaper’s lover. The Reaper then turned on his Reaper Brothers and killed them. So, no relationships allowed. After this is when Baylon and his brothers were recruited by death to be Reapers.The Dark Fae are after all the half human, half Fae to kill them. Jordyn is just that. So the Reapers protect her and use her to draw out the Dark Fae to execute them. There are some really heated love scenes between Baylon and Jordyn. Very spicy!! I’m crushin’ on Baylon! The other Reapers sound kinda hot too. Talin, Kyran, Eoghan, Fintan, Daire, and the leader Cael. Can’t wait for their books!!I was given and ARC of this book by NetGalley for an honest review.

I just knew the Reapers were going to have to kill all the half-fae and it would be a blood bath. However, I should have known that Ms. Grant wouldn’t have caused such a mess and Cael would go see Erith (AKA Death). And, boy, was she ticked off that someone sent Cael orders that weren’t from her. There would be hell to pay for that little treasonous mistake.I really liked Baylon and Jordyn. They were a perfect couple and the book is short enough there was not any angst. I also liked Cael, Kyran, Talin, Eoghan (don’t know how to pronounce his name, though,) Daire, and was up in the air about Fintan, since he seemed to be without feelings and would kill anyone he’s ordered to, without question, but he turned out to be as good as the rest of them.I admit I did cry when all those darks came to Jordyn’s flat again, and what happened, happened.Another great book by DG and I never get tired of reading them. I’m happy with the new Reaper series.Some great sexual attraction and greater sex.

By pw reader Clearly Dark Alpha's Claim by Donna Grant has ties to the Dragon King Series as evidenced from the form chapter. Still the author tackles the task marvelously of bring a new reader up to speed with the necessary characters from the Dragon Kings. I do think that the background information given will peak reader’s interest to read the previous series if they have not done so already.Jordyn and Baylon have instant lust and love follows right on lust’s heels giving a feeling of it being out of their control but instead fate. I’m hoping this is because it is a short novel so that a longer one would develop the character’s relationship more before instead of after. The events involving the entire group of Reapers devising their strategy or engaging the enemy when more interesting. The suspense and intrigue added to the plot more so than the romance in this book. Then the twist at the end was brilliant.For this story I found more than characters in similarities between it and the Dragon Kings. Past grievances come back to haunt Death and the Reapers along with past betrayals. Lastly while Jordyn’s and Baylon’s story is completed in this book, another overarching theme is introduced. Since the Dragon Kings are still at war with the Dark, I can only guess that these two story-lines will connect or intersect and not just parallel each other.Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.

The modern day saga moves across central Europe to Turkey and back, interspersed with the last days of the first crusade, where the story starts near Antioch and ends back in Normandy. In the modern story, the no-nonsense and liberated Vanda is an archeologist who tries to make sense of several artifacts whose origins span great distances but that are seemingly made by the same hand, while finding herself in danger from others who are smuggling or faking artifacts from Syria and other near east countries that are engulfed in war. The story in the first crusade is an altogether gentler and more moving tale of unexpected love, unexpected profit, and eventual loss. I wished that the story of Vanda in the modern story had a less ambiguous ending, as I wanted to know what choices she would make, whereas the medieval story has a wonderfully poignant ending. In summary, I found the modern story of Vanda and the artifacts to be interesting but a little underdeveloped, whereas I found the medieval story absolutely captivating. In many ways I wish that the medieval story had been fleshed out more, for Ms Pines has a knack for creating vivid images and truly believable and surprising characters in that setting. I gave the novel four stars because of the inventiveness of the plot and the strength and development of the medieval tale. I hope to read more by this author.

There is nothing what could not have happened - it means that the plot is well and believably developed. The only thing I am curious about is why this book was not yet transferred to movie script to make another block-buster for Hollywood.

Instead of one alpha vampires there are two.You meet Annabelle who has been looking for vampires since an incident happened to her 15 years earlier. She sees her best friend's father killed by a vampire & then her best friend & her father disappear. She just wants to know what happened to them. She ends up finding vampire Nicolas from receiving a phone call from a mysterious Mr. X.Nicolas is an alpha in every sense of the word. After Anna breaks into his apt. she goes back to his apt. the next night to follow him. She ends up following him to a club & he ends up taking her into an alley to find out what she is doing. He thinks she may be trying to kill him. She tells him she is looking for a certain vampire who has answers to what happened to her friend & father. Nicolas decides to help her because he wants revenge against this vampire. Anna is trying to fight her attraction to Nicolas & does for a little while but that resolve ends up crumbling. They end up at Aleksander's home which was previously Nicolas's they end up separated. Nicolas tries to compel Anna to leave while he leads the other vampires away from her ::) it she doesn't and goes in the palace. She comes face to face with Aleksander & is now going to get answers to what happened then. Will she be happy with the answers she gets & will she be reunited with Nicolas?

By Book Addiction As a fan of Mallory Crowe and paranormal books, I was excited to learn she was writing a series on vampires and couldn't wait to start reading. This book started real slow and is the reason for four stars instead of five. I would encourage you to keep reading as it certainly picked up at the halfway mark.This is a standalone book. But now that I've finished it, I can't wait to see which vampire the next book is about.

I adore Mallory Crowe's writing and have thoroughly enjoyed every one of her books.I wasn't sure if I would equally respond to her branching out into a paranormal series but I was entirely mesmerized by Book 1 of Bad Boys Of The Underworld.In this first book, Annabelle is a human who has been interested in finding a vampire ever since her abusive father and her best friend disappeared 15 years ago. She has joined a group interested in vampires (they each have their own reasons) and one night out on a run, she is contacted by a mysterious man that there is a vampire living in the apartment building across from where she currently is. She breaks into that apartment and finds that a vampire does live there so she follows him the next night. Nicholas is said vampire. He is on his own mission to wants revenge on the vampire (Aleksander) who killed his father and took over the castle. He is not interested in this human until he realizes she could be useful in his plan. But, neither can ignore the electric sexual tension between them.The entire story is full of mystery, suspense, intrigue as well as believable romantic emotions. I could not put the book down and wanted to keep reading to learn how this one ended.As with Mallory's other books, I appreciated the fact that there is not an overload of a multitude of characters that are difficult to keep track of. And the building of the back-story as well as making it easy to like both Annabelle and Nicholas hooked me from the start. The sexual tension between them was believeable and the scenes when they let their feelings take over were fun and steamy.I really enjoyed the entire book and will look forward to reading the next book in the Bad Boys series.

El libro está bien escrito y es ameno. No es notorio el ingrediente humorístico que caracterizó el primer libro, "Ojos de agua", pero en este se nota menos la prisa del escritor, su demonio interno que le impulsa a acabar de una vez con esa novela que le quita el sueño y que le impide seguir con otra cosa.El ritmo es más lento, pues, pero eso no hace que la novela sea mejor que la primera. A veces cae la historia en una especie de pantano del que no se sabe como salir. Se nota que en este libro el autor tuvo que trabajar un poco más, no tanto por la extensión, sino por los enredos y desenredos que se ven en la historia, una trama ligeramente más compleja que en el anterior.Nos hubiera gustado sentir un poco más a Estévez, el ayudante del comisario, un personaje clave en ambas novelas. Pero...Fuera de lo dicho con anterioridad, vale decir que es un buen libro y que nos caen bien el comisario y su ayudante, las costas gallegas y su comida.

Soon just to leave you cold and anxious yet to discover. Villar's use of specific vocabulary that labels the different tools that comprise a fishing industry is engaging as well as instructive. Could not put it down.

Bien escrita, personjes sólidos, trama inteligente, buen ritmo, impecable uso de la tercera persona…El inspector Caldas nada tiene que envidiar a sus homólogos Wallander o Jaritos.Sólo puedo recomendar su lectura a todos los amantes de la buena policiaca.

Just enough angst to keep it interesting and resolution at the appropriate time. Although this book is the first in a series, it isn't a cliffhanger pleases me immensely. It can be read as a stand alone; however, the epilogue segues into the next book in the series which I definitely plan to read.

By Juliet Burns This author has a smart, contemporary voice with 20-something characters that grab you by the heart. Loved the premise and the conflict. The whole story felt like it could really happen. Loved the hero's secret and the way everything is resolved. Plus it was a fast read and obviously going to be a series. Can't wait for the other girlfriends' stories!

Random fun turned into something she was looking for without knowing it. Gives us single gals hope and shows us that we shouldn't prejudge anyone and that the best love stories can come out of the most random situations as long as we are open to love.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful book By Evelitza I really enjoyed this book. Melanie and Tyler both was great people both with completely different struggles. I loved just loved how Tyler prays for Melanie in one part of the book. Sadly to say you don’t see a lot men being open with their relationship with Jesus, especially see a man just drop what he is doing and start praying out loud of the person. I think Ms. Jordan did a wonderful job in this book. I loved all her books, but this one is my favorite so far. Melanie went through so much when she was young, but Ms. Jordan shows us that even in our toughest times God is still there waiting for us to lean on to Him. Quote from the book I enjoyed, “God wants us to seek after Him. It’s like any relationship-you need to get to know the other person. That’s true with God too. Study His word. Spend time in prayer. Listen to sermons that feed your knowledge of Him.” God bless Ms. Jordan keep up the hard work and following what the Lord gives you.

A little suspense, close friendships, and a lot of romance. Love how the characters are entwined from one book to another. You feel like you get to catch up with old friends and make new ones too. I would definitely recommend all her books.

Ms. Jordan is an amazing writer and I love reading her work. "A matter of trust," shows love and compassion while displaying past wounds that were never healed. I love how the writer uses the Scriptures and strong men who are not ashamed of being known as men of integrity. The plot is awesome, the story is real and I can't wait to read the next one. (I've read all of her books and not been disappointed).

A really good cyberpunk/sci-fi bundle By denesK I purchased the books separately one-by-one so long ago, that the Code breakers series had a different title. It was called "Artificial Evil" and had a pretty horrid cover art. It got me hooked immediately and I have read the entire series since.Be advised: Code Breakers has more episodes than what's in the bundle (2 more and 1 prequel) ..When I was "out" of reading, I started looking at other books from C.F. Barnes and found out about Hollow Space (Xantoverse).... I was hesitant as I haven't really read sci-fi (since Stanislav Lem's Eden .. or so ... ).... Well ... without much ado: I am back into the "space kind of sci-fi" now thanks to Hollow Space.About Hollow Space: you have to be open to new ideas and have a vivid imagination to fully enjoy that book. Yes, there are some walking trees in it, and they are more complex than Groot (and cooler IMO).Daedalus code is a somewhat shorter cyberpunk/sci-fi novel that takes place in a pretty messed up future (it is significantly less messed up than the one pictured in Code Breakers)Price: uhm ... 5 good books for $2.99 is a good deal ...

Excellent Value with this Box Set By Michael Gallagher This books in this box set will get you thinking – in Code Breakers Alpha and Beta, for example, the author does a great job of getting you inside the head (pun intended) of his characters, and what I found refreshing for this one was he doesn't try to overwhelm you with the future technology or situations in a post-apocalyptic world: we've all read SF where you want to call b.s. on a futuristic technology but in this case it's believable, and you can wrap your arms around it and understand it. The action scenes are fairly realistic, and you will find your pulse racing (mine did) at various times as you feel as if you are right there.I originally picked this box set up for just 99 cents vs. the regular price of each standalone book of $3.99 each or about $20. I certainly received a lot more than 99 cents worth of entertainment value. If you're looking for a change of pace from a lot of the sci-fi out there today, I'd recommend giving this box set a shot.

Plots are nothing without believable characters and Barnes' are so well-written that you can live 'em, hate 'em, cheer them on or wish them dead and gone!

Order up....one sexy tattoo artist By kendra KB Winters, Seal'd Perfection has shot to the top of my most favorite books by you.When I started reading this book I thought it was going to be about Kat suffering from post partum depression, and then it took a turn that I wasn't expecting when Kat walks in on her husband having an affair with his receptionist, Kat shows us what a stong women she is an leaves, doesn't take his comment "it meant nothing". I stood up and cheered when she walked away and stayed away.Struggling to make ends meet, but making it work, Kat and her son Jax are reuilding their life in a new town, Kat has a job and is going to school to make life better for them. Kat thinks that being alone is enough for them till Jace, the retired navy seal/tattoo artist moves in across the street from the diner.Working up the nerve, Jace finally asks Kat out, and shocking us all Kat says yes. The date goes great, and things start to get hot and heavy, when Kat has a moment of OMG what am I doing, and goes running for the hills. When Kat has to rush to the hospital when Jax is sick, her ex meets Jace and is not happy with what his ex wife has been doing while their son was sick.I have a feeling that book two is going to see Kat's ex causing drama, but I am hoping it will see Kat with Jace, and maybe getting some inl of her own.Book two needed soon please

I'm a huge fan of her writing.Kat decides she wants to spice up her marriage with Mitch and surprises him at the office. She's the one who's surprised. She's now a single mother working at a diner to make ends meet. While working, she sees a moving truck in front of the business accross the street. In walks tattoo covered hottie Jace. Jace is a reality show star and moved to this small town to break away from old demons.You can really get a good feel of their chemistry. I can'twait for the next book!This is a quick read and does end in a cliffhanger.

Unfortunately, David inserted several highly implausible plots into the story near the end. It required me to suspend all reason and buy into his bizarre plots and subplots. He took a great character and embroiled him and Reel in a strange unbelievable story. Baldacci is capable of better writing and better stories. Sorry I wasted my time reading it.

It actually pains me to write this about someone who had once been one of my favorite authors.There was a time when David Baldacci was my second favorite author. He slowly dropped from #2 but remained in my top 5. Then he dropped somewhere between 6 and 10.Now?Now I sadly can state I’m close to giving up on him completely. His novels have become formulaic. Characters interchangeable. It almost feels like he uses the same template—and then just inserts whichever character. (Am I the only one who feels there no difference between King and Sean Maxwell and Will Robie?)I will say that, for some reason, I never got into ‘The Camel Club’ series. That was okay, though because I loved John Puller as well as King and Maxwell and Robie and Reel. His standalones were…good. But even those always felt like it could have been one in a series.Lately, the only novels of his I’ve enjoyed are the John Puller books. “The Forgotten,” which was the first Baldacci book I ever read, as well as ‘Zero Day’ and ‘The Escape’ were great novels.However, the last several non-Puller books I came across were really struggles to get through.First Family (K & M) was a big disappointment. The president’s family was so unbelievable the book was almost laughable. But I suffered through it cause…well, it’s Baldacci.I read ‘Split Second,’ the first K & M book. I finished it mostly due to the fact it was interesting to see how K&M started out. The story, the plot and the writing was a bit of a struggle. But I read it cause…well, it’s Baldacci.“The Innocent” was the first Will Robie novel. I found it awful, especially Robie’s sidekick who was 13 going on 35. It was not believable and read like a comic book…but I struggled through it because…well, it’s Baldacci.This evening I started reading ‘The Guilty.’ I was very excited to delve into his brand new novel. Well, I cant believe I’m writing this about a Baldacci novel but for the first time in my life, I simply could NOT finish it. Just an awful terrible book.The book started out great. The first 25 pages had me pulled in. Then—it turned to cr*p.I wont reveal a spoiler but I will say Will goes down to the sticks on Mississippi to investigate a murder. Now, I understand authors need to write dialogue to reflect the way people speak. The book needs to ‘ring true.’ But this was too much, too over the top. I’ve never been a fan of or have enjoyed southern writers such as Faulkner or Tennessee Williams. And that’s what this book became.After only 60 pages I gave up.Mayb’ it’s me, y’all but this here done book? Nosirree, it jus’ didn’ do nuthin’ fors me and I’ze jus’ foun’ it too har’ to read. I reckon I hadta read ev’ry sentence a coupla times to understan’ what they was talkin’ ‘bout there.See what I did there? That’s how this book read. I even flipped ahead to page 125, 150, 200 just to see if Robie would ever be conversing with people who don’t have thick southern accents.But even as I flipped forwards, I done seen more and mores words done there cut off and that’s when, by God, I reckon’ it was time fors me to given up on this here book.I’ve come to the sad realization that if you’ve read one Baldacci book, you’ve read them all.Why do so many characters have ‘daddy issues’, be it Michelle Maxwell, John Puller and now Will Robie?Why does every protagonist have deep-seeded self-doubt and always ALWAYS have mixed emotions about what they do?Will Robie comes from a small town in the swamps of Mississippi. Michelle Maxwell comes from a small town in Tennessee.Will Robie has issues with his father. Michelle Maxwell has issues with her father. John Puller has issues with father.Be it King or now Robie, they work for the government but always want to get out. They spend the novel believing this will be their last case. And sure enough, at the end, they agree to come back for one more.Why does every male lead (Maxwell, Robie, Oliver Stone) always appear as the principled straight man while all around him are sneaky.His books, sadly, have become so clichéd and so predictable and the writing almost so simplistic, they are preposterous.Sure enough, in one scene in ‘The Guilty’ Robie, distraught and mulling over getting out (as all Baldacci characters always do), is walking through the streets of Washington DC in the rain. Just him and his thoughts. Alone. All alone. Then, wouldn’t you know it but who comes out of the bushes all quiet and sneaky as if in a Hollywood spoof, but Robie’s boss—the msysterious shadow “Blue Man.” In a clichéd conversation, Robie asks, “How did you know I’d be here?” to which Blue Man replies, something like “I know the way you think.’ With that, Blue Man hands Robie the stereotypical manila folder, then retreats stealthily into the dense shrubbery seemingly swallowed by the darkness of Washington.Sheeesh!Just an awful book. This year Mr. Baldacci wrote 3 novels. 3 novels in 11 months. I really wish he’d writer slower but better. His books have become boringly predictable, his characters are all carbon copies of one another and his storylines have become mundane and uninteresting.

Will Robie, the hit man, still has a conscience By Suncoast This is #4 in David Baldacci's bestselling series about Will Robie, the hit man with a conscience. I had wondered how Baldacci could keep this kind of series going. His answer is to make it personal and go back to Robie's early days.While a major hit by Robie is successful, the collateral damage of the death of a young girl by the same bullet is too emotional for Robie to take. He is not able to complete his next assignment where a young boy is in the same room as his target.His controller tells him to take a break and get himself together again. At the same time, he tells him that his estranged father has been arrested for murder. Reluctantly Robie goes back to the small Mississippi town that he left over 20 years ago to find out what has happened. Robie has to face up to his past and the estranged father who physically and mentally abused him for so many years.I enjoyed the first half of the book (3.5 stars) as Robie adjusts again to life in the small deep-south town he abandoned a long time ago. Many things have changed. His father is now a Judge, has remarried a beautiful woman around Robie's age and has a 3-year-old son (so Robie now has a stepmother and half-brother). He starts to come to grips with the past and tries to work out if he can help his father - the only way to get his father released is to find the actual murderer. But his father is not very enthusiastic about his help.The second part of the book is basically a third-rate whodunit (2 stars). When his colleague Jessica Reel comes to help him the body count escalates. Robie and Reel discover more murders, blackmail, pedophilia, incest, and consanguinity. Of course along the way they get ambushed and chased by the baddies. The eventual exposure of the murderer was so ridiculous' that I actually laughed out loud.The main saving grace is that at the end Robie stands out as an honorable and caring individual - once again an hit man with a conscience.I was able to read and review this book because it was published in the Australian region on 27 October, but won't be released in the US until 17 November.
