The fog mixed with smoke, smell of fire, smell of blood, sweat, and urine, smell of death. Was this God's intention? Rogier was holding his sword, shaking from exhaustion, painfully breathing. The ground around him was soaked with blood. His eyes mechanically scanned gory surroundings covered with the dead and the dying. At last he could stop, for there was nobody left to fight... Vanda, an archaeologist, is thrust into the world of organized crime and forgery of antiquities while investigating an artifact connected to the helmet of Saint Wenceslaus. The story begins with the First Crusade and two knights, brothers, who go to the holy land to fight for God, but only find pain, suffering, and death. We follow the two brothers, and the reverberations of their journey into the present day. While following the trail of the crusaders, Vanda, who has a rather unconventional personal life, not only finds herself in a dangerous world she did not expect, but finds both love and sorrow in a place she did not imagine.

The modern day saga moves across central Europe to Turkey and back, interspersed with the last days of the first crusade, where the story starts near Antioch and ends back in Normandy. In the modern story, the no-nonsense and liberated Vanda is an archeologist who tries to make sense of several artifacts whose origins span great distances but that are seemingly made by the same hand, while finding herself in danger from others who are smuggling or faking artifacts from Syria and other near east countries that are engulfed in war. The story in the first crusade is an altogether gentler and more moving tale of unexpected love, unexpected profit, and eventual loss. I wished that the story of Vanda in the modern story had a less ambiguous ending, as I wanted to know what choices she would make, whereas the medieval story has a wonderfully poignant ending. In summary, I found the modern story of Vanda and the artifacts to be interesting but a little underdeveloped, whereas I found the medieval story absolutely captivating. In many ways I wish that the medieval story had been fleshed out more, for Ms Pines has a knack for creating vivid images and truly believable and surprising characters in that setting. I gave the novel four stars because of the inventiveness of the plot and the strength and development of the medieval tale. I hope to read more by this author.

There is nothing what could not have happened - it means that the plot is well and believably developed. The only thing I am curious about is why this book was not yet transferred to movie script to make another block-buster for Hollywood.
