No refund needed but you'll get the truth By M R Miles I love a good sci-fi romance but the writer couldn't get out their heads long enough to actually write a good story. Yes I know it was in first person but the history lesson got old fast and so did the ramblings of the characters

By ~ Judi ~ The concept of the alien race (Brions) that this author offers is somewhat original.The beginning of the book was a bit boring but I think it somewhat helps the reader to understand the Brion species better and reminds them that they are nothing like humans in the emotions department.Now the love story between Deliya and Darien was okay but not extremely interesting.The story could have been integrated in the second book, "Alien Warrior's Wife" which I also read. The author's writing does get better in the second book for those who complained about her writing in this book. I suggest read the second book as well.It's short like this one but has a much better storyline.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ice Queen meets her match! By Robyn A strong Heroine! Yes! Deliya is a fierce warrior and dedicated soldier for the Brion army. She is caught between the battle on the ground with the Antaris people and her heart. Brion women are as equal as the men. They both have needs in all areas of life, and they do get met. Love is one area that is strangely different and could be met with resistance to appear as an act of desperation. Darien is a chosen warrior of the Commander. Darien is Deliya’s male counterpart. These two together are an amazing couple. They both have passion and desires that flood each other. Does the commander know something they do not? Are they fated mates? Will one slip-up change all of this? The story line is good. Little bit confusing in the beginning. I hope to read more relationship development and not so much battles. Great read from Vi Voxley.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. 3 stars By Karen Talley The premise of this book is excellent but the execution is somewhat lacking. It needs some serious editing such as using the wrong words. Example: they "peaked over Clara's shoulder." Hmm...believe that is peeked. And proofreading would catch mistakes like "He was glancing around at himself." I think in this case it was the scenery he was taking in. Also, some things just didn't ring true to North Dakota in 1922. A character says "You're like, the best writer, ever." Sounds more like Valley Girl speak of a few years ago. And a proper 19 year old living with her boyfriend? Just don't think that would have been allowed. But, I think this writer has a lot of potential. Her ideas are good and she does well with her characters. With the help of a good editor, I think she would create amazing books.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good plot, no follow through. By Erbecky enjoyed the story line. However the plot was very rushed and the characters were not deveolped. The relationship of the main characters were not convincing to me. I did not finish the story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Clean but not great By phenduck The story was short and clean. There was a little romance. The interesting plot should have been developed more. It was not boring, but it was also not fascinating. The most interesting thing was the role reversal: instead of a mail-order bride, there was a mail-order groom. The frequent grammar errors were distracting, and there were several spelling errors; several times the word "bare" was used instead of "bear," and once "bare" was used for "barely." Sentence structure problems and punctuation errors should have been fixed before this book was published. I hope there was no editor; if there was, that editor should be fired.

WOOLF’S FAMOUS ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF FEMALE AUTHORS By Steven H Propp Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English author, essayist, publisher, and writer of short stories, regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 118-page Harper paperback edition.]She begins this 1929 book with the statement, “But, you say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction---what has that got to do with a room of one’s own? I will try to explain… I should never be able to fulfill what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer---to hand you after an hour’s discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece forever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point---a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved.” (Pg. 3-4)She reveals that when she attempted to enter a library to read a manuscript of Thackeray, she was told “that ladies are only admitted to the library if accompanied by a Fellow of the College, or furnished with a letter of introduction. That a famous library has been cursed by a woman is a matter of complete indifference to a famous library. Venerable and calm, with all its treasures safe locked within its breast, it sleeps complacently and will, so far as I am concerned, so sleep for ever. Never again will I wake those echoes, never will I ask for that hospitality again, I vowed as I descended the steps in anger.” (Pg. 7-8)She recalls a professor: “Possibly when the professor insisted a little too emphatically upon the inferiority of women, he was concerned not with their inferiority, but with his own superiority. That was what he was protecting rather hot-headedly and with too much emphasis, because it was a jewel to him of the rarest price… Without self-confidence we are as babes in the cradle. And how can we generate this imponderable quality…? By thinking that other people are inferior to oneself. By feeling that one has some innate superiority---it may be wealth, or rank, a straight nose, or the portrait of a grandfather by Romney---for there is no end to the pathetic devices of the human imagination---over other people.” (Pg. 34-35) She adds, “Under the spell of that illusion… They start the day confident… they say to themselves as they go into the room, I am the superior of half the people here, and it is thus that they speak with that self-confidence, that self-assurance, which have had such profound consequences in public life and lead to such curious mores in the margin of the private mind.” (Pg. 36-37)She rhetorically asks, “it is a perennial puzzle why no woman wrote a word of that extraordinary literature when every other man, it seemed, was capable of song or sonnet. What were the conditions in which women lived, I asked myself.” (Pg. 43) She powerfully points out, “I could not help thinking, as I looked at the works of Shakespeare… that… it would have been impossible … for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare. Let me imagine… what would have happened had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith… She was as adventurous, as imaginative, as agog to see the world as he was. But she was not sent to school. She had no chance of learning grammar and logic… She picked up a book now and then… But then her parents came in and told her to mend the stockings or mind the stew and not moon about books and papers… She had the quickest fancy, a gift like her brother’s, for the tune of words. Like him, she had a taste for the theater. She stood at the stage door; she wanted to act, she said. Men laughed in her face… She could get no training in her craft… That, more or less, is how the story would run … if a woman in Shakespeare’s day had had Shakespeare’s genius…” (Pg. 48-50)She suggests, “[In fiction] All these relationships between women… are too simple. So much has been left out, unattempted… almost without exception they are shown in their relation to men. It is strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen’s day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only in relation to the other sex. And how small a part of a woman’s life is that; and how little can a man know even of that when he observes it through the black or rosy spectacles which sex puts upon his nose.” (Pg. 86)She concludes, “it is far more important at the moment to know how much money women had and how many rooms than to theorize about their capacities… you may object that in all this I have made too much of the importance of material things. Even allowing a generous margin for symbolism, that five hundred a year stands for the power to contemplate, that a lock on the door means the power to think for oneself…” (Pg. 109-110) She adds, “Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom. And women have always been poor… from the beginning of time. Women have had less intellectual freedom than the sons of Athenian slaves. Women, then, have not had a dog’s chance of writing poetry. That is why I have laid so much stress on money and a room of one’s own.” (Pg. 112)This is a profound and always-timely response to the argument, “Why are there no great women poets/writers/scientists/philosophers?” [Of course, since Woolf wrote in 1929, we now HAVE seen women excel in all these areas, so far fewer people will ask such questions.] This is one of Woolf’s fascinating books, and is of great importance for the development of later feminist thought.

It is more a collection of observations, which were important, even radical, a century ago, some are probably timeless and thus still of importance. It improves as it develops more.

This new series By Maisie D Let’s just say I’ve read a lot on Ms Grant’s books and never have I been disappointed! This new series, The Reapers, is an off shoot of The Dragon Kings. A series which I love to death!! This book is a quick read and not a very complex story. But it’s wonderful.The Reapers who are Fae themselves, are the executioners of the Fae, Light and Dark,. If they do something evil or illegal the Reapers are there to carry out justice. This book is about Baylon and Jordyn. As soon as they see each other they know they were destined for each other. They feel it in every fiber of their being! They can’t keep their hands off each other. Baylon knows he’s not allowed to love someone. But… According to Death, who is the founder of the Reapers, no relationships or entanglements are allowed. The last Reaper who fell in love, centuries ago, went wrong and Death killed the Reaper’s lover. The Reaper then turned on his Reaper Brothers and killed them. So, no relationships allowed. After this is when Baylon and his brothers were recruited by death to be Reapers.The Dark Fae are after all the half human, half Fae to kill them. Jordyn is just that. So the Reapers protect her and use her to draw out the Dark Fae to execute them. There are some really heated love scenes between Baylon and Jordyn. Very spicy!! I’m crushin’ on Baylon! The other Reapers sound kinda hot too. Talin, Kyran, Eoghan, Fintan, Daire, and the leader Cael. Can’t wait for their books!!I was given and ARC of this book by NetGalley for an honest review.

I just knew the Reapers were going to have to kill all the half-fae and it would be a blood bath. However, I should have known that Ms. Grant wouldn’t have caused such a mess and Cael would go see Erith (AKA Death). And, boy, was she ticked off that someone sent Cael orders that weren’t from her. There would be hell to pay for that little treasonous mistake.I really liked Baylon and Jordyn. They were a perfect couple and the book is short enough there was not any angst. I also liked Cael, Kyran, Talin, Eoghan (don’t know how to pronounce his name, though,) Daire, and was up in the air about Fintan, since he seemed to be without feelings and would kill anyone he’s ordered to, without question, but he turned out to be as good as the rest of them.I admit I did cry when all those darks came to Jordyn’s flat again, and what happened, happened.Another great book by DG and I never get tired of reading them. I’m happy with the new Reaper series.Some great sexual attraction and greater sex.

By pw reader Clearly Dark Alpha's Claim by Donna Grant has ties to the Dragon King Series as evidenced from the form chapter. Still the author tackles the task marvelously of bring a new reader up to speed with the necessary characters from the Dragon Kings. I do think that the background information given will peak reader’s interest to read the previous series if they have not done so already.Jordyn and Baylon have instant lust and love follows right on lust’s heels giving a feeling of it being out of their control but instead fate. I’m hoping this is because it is a short novel so that a longer one would develop the character’s relationship more before instead of after. The events involving the entire group of Reapers devising their strategy or engaging the enemy when more interesting. The suspense and intrigue added to the plot more so than the romance in this book. Then the twist at the end was brilliant.For this story I found more than characters in similarities between it and the Dragon Kings. Past grievances come back to haunt Death and the Reapers along with past betrayals. Lastly while Jordyn’s and Baylon’s story is completed in this book, another overarching theme is introduced. Since the Dragon Kings are still at war with the Dark, I can only guess that these two story-lines will connect or intersect and not just parallel each other.Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.

About the Author The author was born in Prague, Czech Republic, where she lived and studied till the late nineties when she moved to California to work as a scientist in drug discovery, first in academic and then industrial sector. She received a Master's degree in Material Science (the expertise of the main character of her book), PhD in Organic Chemistry, and has many years of experience in Medicinal Chemistry. She authored and co-authored over thirty professional papers in peer-reviewed journals and books.

The modern day saga moves across central Europe to Turkey and back, interspersed with the last days of the first crusade, where the story starts near Antioch and ends back in Normandy. In the modern story, the no-nonsense and liberated Vanda is an archeologist who tries to make sense of several artifacts whose origins span great distances but that are seemingly made by the same hand, while finding herself in danger from others who are smuggling or faking artifacts from Syria and other near east countries that are engulfed in war. The story in the first crusade is an altogether gentler and more moving tale of unexpected love, unexpected profit, and eventual loss. I wished that the story of Vanda in the modern story had a less ambiguous ending, as I wanted to know what choices she would make, whereas the medieval story has a wonderfully poignant ending. In summary, I found the modern story of Vanda and the artifacts to be interesting but a little underdeveloped, whereas I found the medieval story absolutely captivating. In many ways I wish that the medieval story had been fleshed out more, for Ms Pines has a knack for creating vivid images and truly believable and surprising characters in that setting. I gave the novel four stars because of the inventiveness of the plot and the strength and development of the medieval tale. I hope to read more by this author.

There is nothing what could not have happened - it means that the plot is well and believably developed. The only thing I am curious about is why this book was not yet transferred to movie script to make another block-buster for Hollywood.
