The Only Best Place (Holmes Crossing), by Carolyne Aarsen

From Publishers Weekly The heroine of this charming novel, the first in a series, is Leslie VandeKeere, who unhappily follows her husband hundreds of miles to Montana. There, they will be helping out on his family farm for a year, after which the VandeKeeres plan to return to their glitzier urban life in Seattle. Shortly after their arrival in Montana, however, Leslie begins to notice certain changes in her husband: he starts going to church with his family and seems quite happy to be pulled back into the fold of his mother and sisters. Leslie doesn't fancy this transformation, and she doesn't like his designs to stay in Montana forever. The plot has few surprises and is in fact an old chestnut of faith fiction: cosmopolitan sophisticates find faith, family ties and purpose in a small town. But Aarsen's strong character development makes up for that, as readers will find themselves feeling sympathetic for, and seeing things from the viewpoint of, nearly every character. There are a few slips—Leslie wants nothing to do with the Christian subculture, yet she casually invokes Gary Chapman's "five love languages," a tidbit of evangelical-speak that a secular urbanite like Leslie wouldn't know. Nonetheless, this promising new series in Christian fiction is sure to find many fans. (Sept. 18) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

But, in Carolyn Aarsen's "The Only Best Place", one woman who used to think that way is suddenly believing in something outside of her realm.Leslie Vandekeere finds herself relocating by force. This new community, a farming community, is extremely different from the hustle and bustle of her life in Seattle. While trying to find some normalcy in her new life, Leslie is constantly looking to the future when she and her family can go back to Seattle. When Leslie finally lets go and begins to appreciate her surroundings, she begins an amazing transformation of character. Instead of looking to the future, she begins to take her husband's words into consideration, "We don't know how long anything lasts, but have learned to appreciate each day we have together."Aarsen's characters are realistic and true to everyday life. There are many ways that people could identify with the main character; being a working mother, being in a marriage that is hanging on by a thread, and dealing with a meddling mother-in-law. I'm positive that there are people out there who can identify with the struggle for truth, the struggle for what is real and what to believe. Leslie's transition is so smooth and believable, like it could happen to anyone.A common cliché comes to mind after reading this book: When you hit rock bottom you can only go up. In order to get to a comfortable place in her life, Leslie had to realize that she would have to give her troubles to a God she didn't know. As she learns new ways to "let go", she learns a new way to live and love life.Carolyne Aarsen does a wonderful job at portraying most women's fears: losing her family, her children, her dreams, and most importantly a fear of losing her identity to the one thing she knows nothing about....faith.Aarsen transforms a woman who believes she is losing her life as she knows it, to a woman who comes to terms with the fact that dreams can change. As a woman who sometimes, uncharacteristically, doubts my own faith and my own future, I have learned that this book is meant to be a lesson in life. A lesson that will show any woman that there is always hope and there is a bright side to every situation. Through a new family, a new community, and new beliefs, Aarsen has taught me that, with a little faith, God will provide. The only thing that I ask is that He provide Ms. Aarsen with a swift pen......I need the next book!Book received free of charge.

112 of 138 people found the following review helpful. Don't be fooled -- this is NOT a Christian novel! By Meg Brunner Oh man, this book made me really, really angry. It started out pretty entertaining, which is why I ended up reading the whole thing, despite the misgivings that started to kick in right around page 200 (which, right around page 250, slowly began to turn from simple misgivings to stunned horror). It's about a young married couple, Dan and Leslie, who are struggling with a variety of issues in their marriage (infidelity on the husband's part, and a loss of their business in Seattle) when they decide the best thing to do for their finances and their family of four (two kids) is to go live on the farm where Dan grew up. The farm, in Montana, has been struggling for a while, and Dan wants to return -- for a year only, he promises -- to help his mother get the farm back into good shape so she can sell it. Leslie is 100% city girl, an emergency room nurse and a lover of Seattle, and she agrees to the move as long as Dan swears -- really swears -- that it's temporary, that he'll be compensated for the work he does to the farm, and that they will not touch the thirty-thousand or so dollars they've worked so hard to save for their dream house. The problems start almost immediately. Leslie doesn't know anything about farming, and Dan's mother and one of his sisters are overbearing, judgmental, and just outright nasty people to be around. Everything Leslie does is wrong, and she feels lambasted and criticized at every turn, with no one there who truly supports her, including her husband. Speaking of her husband, Dan gets back to the farm and almost immediately begins to renege on every promise he made to his wife -- including essentially robbing the dream house account of $19K, without talking to Leslie first, so he can buy a tractor, and telling Leslie he has decided he does not want to return to Seattle. He doesn't support his wife's struggles against his mother's callousness, and when Leslie decides she wants to return to work at the local hospital, the one place where she does feel she fits in, he acts like a big stupid baby about it and essentially tells her doing so will destroy their family.Things go rapidly downhill from there. By the end of the book, Leslie has turned into a Stepford Wife, suddenly turning to religion (turns out, this is a Christian book, though after finishing it, I'm pretty dubious that its author actually knows a damn thing about Christian values) and falling in love with the farming life and her husband all over again. The reason this SO sickened me was because it made me realize that all along, Leslie was actually being portrayed sort of as the enemy of Christian ethics. She wanted to work instead of care for her children -- well, she'll soon learn that's not acceptable. She didn't want to go to church -- well, she'll soon learn the option is being alone and miserable. She wanted a husband who honored and respected her, instead of failing to support her, cheating on her, and flat-out stealing the money she'd worked so hard to earn for their future -- well, she'll soon learn she's to OBEY her husband, and that questioning his actions only leads to marital strife and unhappiness. She didn't like the judgmental way she was treated by her husband's mother -- well, she'll soon learn that his mother was RIGHT and that she ought to listen to her more often. Not only that, two characters in the book start out acting like non-Christians, and that's when they're supportive of Leslie, and then radically reveal themselves to be Christians after all, immediately snatching back their support of Leslie in the process (I'm referring to Dan and Kathy here, if you've read the book). What is this really telling us about Christian values, I ask you? The "good" Christians in this novel are mean, duplicitous, judgmental, and, in Dan's case, adulterers and thieves. The "bad" Christians (Leslie, e.g.) are struggling to do all the things that are actually good, in my opinion -- trying to raise her kids to be happy and making decisions based on what's best for them instead of what her mother-in-law wants, trying to maintain her own personal identity while also fueling her relationships and marriage, trying to adapt to a radical change in her lifestyle to support her spouse, etc.All in all, this novel left me feeling queasy and utterly, completely offended. I think all Christians should be outraged by the message of this novel, and that goes double for any Christians who are also feminists (and yes, there actually are Christian feminists!). Ugh, I can't believe I held this book in my hands and found myself ENJOYING it for the first half. I think I need a shower.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. it was easy to place myself in Leslie's shoes By Michelle Beattie Carolyne Aarsen really nailed the angst of her heroine. As a mother of two myself, it was easy to place myself in Leslie's shoes. I felt her frustration, her loss of identity and purpose. It's hard to have a family, marriage and career all at the same time and Ms. Aarsen easily and skillfully portrayed all the emotions a mother goes through to keep her family together.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Jason Bourne & James Bond, Welcome Mark Cole to Your World. Quick Reading Fast-Paced Suspense. Well Worth the 99 Cents Price. By Bill Anderson Length: Print, 348 pages; Audible, not yet available as an audiobook, but would be a bestseller.Target Audience/Genre: This is an Action-Adventure novel targeted to adult fans of James Bond or Jason Bourne. What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 1,091.Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? Yes, this is the first in the series. Even though it is a first in the series, this is a stand alone story. Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? No, very well written and edited. Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? Quick-paced book that kept me riveted. What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Adult English. F-bombs included, but not terribly frequent. My biggest pleasure or disappointment was the action sequences, especially when the hero applies his skill in marma adi, a martial art originating in southeast India.I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.EXCERPTClyde Rutherford raised his glass first, clearing his voice as the excited chatter ceased and all eyes turned his way. ‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ he announced, ‘let’s show our appreciation for Vice Admiral Charles Hansard!’There were whoops and cheers, and loud applause as Hansard raised his own glass, acknowledging the praise. He let it continue for a few moments before holding up a calming hand, waiting for the applause to finish before he spoke.‘Thank you,’ he said finally. ‘Thank you for your kindness, and thank you for the work you have all put in yourselves. Do not forget that we are all in this together, brothers and sisters striving for a new path for our nation; a better path, a safer path, and certainly a more profitable path.’There was laughter, and he once again held up a hand for calm. ‘But let us not get ahead of ourselves. The first blow may have been struck, but we all know how much further there is to go before any of us can truly celebrate.’ Hansard watched as heads nodded around the room, taking a sip of Dom Perignon ’49 from the flute in his hand. ‘And let me give another toast,’ he continued in a solemn tone, ‘to the memory of Bill Crozier, until so recently one of our own number.’ Hansard saw some of the group open their mouths to object, but he held up a hand again – amazing how so simple an action could silence even people such as this, he reflected – and said ‘I know how some of you feel, of course. In the end, he was going to subvert his values and go against the whole ethic of the Alumni, perhaps even bringing our plans down around us. But we drink to his memory now for the role he recently played so effectively in such plans.’ He raised his glass again. ‘To Bill.’Everyone in the room raised their own glasses, some more readily than others. ‘To Bill,’ they all said as one.‘And now,’ Hansard said, piercing blue eyes looking over the gathered members of the Alumni, ‘we must prepare for the next phase of our plan.’Cole had the radio tuned into the local news. His recent exploits had been given a full three minutes of airtime, and he had heard himself referred to not only as ‘armed and highly dangerous,’ but as a leading member of a murderous break-off group of Al Qaeda known as the Islamist Jihad Martyrs Brigade. In fact, the news program then spent the next two minutes describing the growing trend in white middle-class converts to radical Islam, and how such extremist groups were utilizing such men for terrorist attacks, as it was easier for such people to avoid surveillance and detection. As Cole eased the stolen Vauxhall hatchback into the vast onslaught of traffic on the westbound M25, he had to laugh at the irony of the situation. Here he was, having spent the last two decades fighting terrorists and their various associates, now accused of being one himself. But he could certainly see the logic of such an accusation. Terrorists were big news, and the fact that there was one on the loose – especially an ‘armed and dangerous’ one – would ensure that all resources were directed his way, with full cooperation from the public. Cole felt sure that there would be a ‘shoot first and ask questions later’ policy in operation. But why? It just didn’t make sense to him. Why would Hansard want him dead now, after all these years? Evidently, it was linked to the assassination of Crozier. Hansard didn’t want him to talk. But why would Hansard have thought he would talk? He hadn’t talked for the year he’d been in P’ang Dakkar prison, and not many men could say that. Hansard knew he could be trusted. So what, then? The answer was there in front of him, taunting him, jeering at him…Brannan, J.T. (2015-11-02). STOP AT NOTHING: America's Deadliest Assassin Becomes the Hunted (Mark Cole Book 1) (Kindle Locations 2029-2065). Grey Arrow. Kindle Edition.Bottom Line:While reading Stop At Nothing I was twice compelled to google for information regarding marma adi and the curse of shiva. Any time a novel does that to me, I consider it a worthy read, for good fiction satisfies readers, but great fiction spurs discriminating readers to research.I realize I may be a neophyte to marma adi, so that information may not be especially pertinent. Get this though – this is a very good work of fiction that should entertain many readers.I wish I could listen to an Audible version though.Comments?

A man used when deniability is a must.As a member of a group so secretive that only the very top government people even know of its existence. Each member is handpicked for their unique skill set.An international incident captured on live broadcast has Cole activated to dispatch the Director of the CIA. While an unusual target, Cole is not one to question his orders, especially when coming from his handler, one of the only men he trusts.Cole is soon the subject of worldwide hunt, set up by a secret group of power brokers, he and his family have been marked for death. A mistake that sets Cole on a worldwide killing spree to save his family and stop those that betrayed him.Packed with action, Mark Cole is a bad, bad man. The body count is high and the action fast and furious. The author doesn't try to use plot tricks to keep you guessing, the plot is straight foreword but he does a great job of leading us through Cole's journey to a conclusion that will leave you with your jaw hanging and a burning thirst for revenge.Mark Cole has huge potential and while the author uses martial art as one of his main skill sets with some technics that stretch even my acceptance of believably there is no denying that Cole could be one the next great action character for those of us that love action/thrillers.There are some grammatical errors that the author should fix but isn't too distracting but does show the lack of quality editing. Still a solid read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Writing Talent Wasted By Dom A woman takes a four mile free swim towing 25 pounds of limpet mines and is described as not even out of breath. The author uses spell check instead of proof reading, with predictable results (e.g., "mercilessly" where the word should be "mercifully"). Superhuman feats are coupled with unbelievable luck. It's too bad, because there is an interesting story here, and the author clearly has some talent. But I ran out of patience about half way through after the umpteenth impossible (or at least ridiculously improbable) escape and had to give up. It appears this author has sold quite a few books, so it's obvious a lot of readers have more tolerance for this sort of thing than I. If you can suspend disbelief to a sufficient degree, you may find this entertaining. But if you insist on applying reasonable critical sensibilities while reading, I suggest you find something else. I hate to write such a critical review, but it seems to me there is a real talent here that is being squandered through carelessness.

Je Tuan Jones has captured the essence of 90's R & B Music and love stories with this novella. Kiley and Darius have a love that has peaks and valleys just like most 90's love songs. Je Tuan's writing captures the essence of the 90's song We Can't Be Friends. It was very relatable and left me wanting more with each chapter. I was in my late teens/early 20's during the 90's and this novella expresses how love was complicated, intense and fun all wrapped into one and the music was the greatest soundtrack to it all. I cannot wait to hear more from Je Tuan and am impatiently waiting for the other "behind the music" stories to come out of this R & B Love Series.

The character descriptions were awesome! I could truly see and feel every character... like I could see these people in my head as the story progressed. This is a great book to cuddle next to the fireplace with a nice red wine and get lost in the complexities we call life. This book is real.

This story truly captures those late 90's R&B feelings, and touches on a topic that many of us battle today. No vulgarity, or profanity, so no need to hide your tablets when reading in public places, lol. The story was clear, no ends left open, and I hope there's a sequel to follow!

Heartwarming By Pamela R Mitchell I really enjoy reading anthologies because I get introduced to new authors I would have never discovered by buying a boxed set that includes one of my favorite authors. FIRST COMES LOVE includes OPENING HEARTS by Iona Findley. I loved every minute of this heartwarming romance between independent and strong Jessalyn O'Donnell and sexy smokejumper Sam Ricci. Highly recommended for all who enjoy a captivating read.

Thinking that a broken heel, spilled coffee, and running late was the worst thing that could happen, boy was she wrong. SAM.hot, hunk, body to die for, a woman for each weak,smokejumper,27 and did i say sexy? Sam a seasonal firefighter, enjoys his job looking forward to doing it for the rest of his life. Sam comes back home after spending 4 months as a smokejumper, to help his brother in his business. Sam had no plan of settling down in fatherhood, just dreaming about the woman he met, had 3 awesome night of sex and would probably never see her again. This story was well written, from beginning to the end. It flows well for a short read. The characters and supporting character lines were well supported, leaving no doubt who was who, nor what their thoughts were. Liked that all that was done so that you didn't get bored with reading. Very enjoyable reading, the story was done in a way that you could picture this really being someone's life story. The intimate scenes have a few crude descriptions of the male (what you would call a rooster) but other than that the book was tactfully done which made it very enjoyable for me.Powerful storyline as Sam does his rescue with is friend Jake. Pensive moments and suspense as well when Jessalyn falls... I don't want to give those scenes away, but when you read this you will know what i mean.

This review is for Opening Hearts only.WOW! I was really impressed with this book. I liked the premise of the story as laid out in the synopsis...it was different and drew me to want to read it. The book moved right along without a lot of the misunderstandings and constant angst of a lot of romance novels for which I was very grateful. There was some tension between the characters but nothing that was earth shattering. It was probably closer to real life than a lot that I've read lately. A very enjoyable read.I liked our two leads, Sam and Jessalyn. Both characters reflect a tremendous amount of growth throughout the book...Sam probably more than Jess. It was interesting watching him move through the different stages of his growth. What I found so compelling about Jess is her strength of character and sheer will--she has buckets of it. Without giving anything away, let me just say that the last six chapters, or so, of the book pack a tremendous punch with plot twists that I didn't see coming. You will be sitting on the edge of your seat wondering how it's going to turn out. This is the first of this author's works that I have read but I will definitely be exploring more of her titles. This is definitely a great read and one that you'll probably read more than once. Kudos to the author!

Characters were the usual cliches in the usual situations. While this predictability is part of the romance genre, it was carried too far here. I generally like short stories better than the long form, but I ended up skimming, skipping and not finishing. Just a meh collection.
