Power, greed, blackmail -- it's all there along with a forbidden love By An Avid Reader Amanda is an up-and-coming campaign manager for Xavier, the President of the United States. They work closely together and fall in love. Unfortunately one of their intimate trysts was recorded by an opportunist who is now blackmailing Amanda for power. Much is at stake -- a marriage, careers, the re-election of the president, etc. Is there possibly a way out of this mess? Some of the dialogue is stilted and contrived, but the essential storyline and plot lines are sound. Worth the read.

Then it started to get interesting with that nut Jason. Then with her friend from years ago she started to hang with. I was so happy when Jason got what he deserved. I was especially glad when Amanda and Xavier finally got to be together and not in secret. I recommend this book to all romance readers.

Some times the names of the characters got very confused with the wrong name used. The most frustrating word was tapped. It was used relentlessly though the book when the word should have been traipsed or walked even paced would have been preferable.

Anica Tomlin, business major, has just learned that the man she's been planning her future around, her Global Finance professor, already has a beautiful wife and family. Ani cashes in her graduation gift to herself a little early—a trip to Tuscany—but from the moment she boards the wrong train in Pisa, her plans for solitude and self-indulgence begin to unravel around her. When a bicycle accident thrusts Ani into the skilled hands of the dashing Dr. Cosimo Lazzaro, she reluctantly accepts his invitation to recover in his family's country villa, perched on a hilltop surrounded by the Lazzaro olive groves. But it's been a black year for olive growers all over Italy, and generations of tradition are being put to the test like never before. Ani is swept up in the drama of life in Tuscany, the convergence of old and new, and the passions that drive people to pursue the desires of their hearts. Just as Ani begins to get her feet under her again, an unexpected turn of events leaves her doubting the very existence of happily-ever-after, unless she can learn to trust the desires of her own heart. Although All the Way to Heaven is a stand-alone novel, it is the first book in The Fallout Series, a collection of sweet contemporary romances that follow characters featured in the first book.

Review "Becky's vivid descriptions place you right into Italy, the quaint village, and then the lush, Tuscan countryside. I highly recommend this book as an excellent means of escaping reality and taking a journey you may not even realize you need, but you do!" ~ Bestselling Author of the Never Forgotten Series, Kelly Risser."A delightfully funny and romantic novel, rich with vivid descriptions of the Tuscan countryside and people who seem more like friends than characters on a page." ~ A. Hardgrave"A romantic setting, irresistible men, and loving family relationships make this a beautiful, memorable story. If you've ever dreamed of visiting Italy, All the Way to Heaven will take you there." ~ Heather Day Gilbert, Vikings of the New World Sagas

From the Author All the Way to Heaven offers readers a unique flavor with its Italian setting and references tocomposer Giacomo Puccini; in particular, his opera La rondine. Whilevisiting the quaint, medieval city of Lucca, Italy, birthplace and stompinggrounds of the brilliant Puccini, I knew I'd find a way to use it as thesetting for an international romance novel one day. When news reports beganairing, labeling 2014 "The Black Year" for Italian olive growers, it felt likethe opportune time to bring Lucca, also renowned for its unique olive oils, outof the idea box and onto the pages of All the Way to Heaven. I do hope you enjoy Ani's journey through the Tuscan countryside as she gains a better understanding of who she is and what she wants out of life in this coming of age novel. All the Way to Heaven is the first book in THE FALLOUT SERIES, but it can be read as a stand-alone novel. Book 2, A Light in the Dark, follows the story of Ani's best friend back home in Midtown, California.I hope you enjoy getting to know these friends and families who live on Maple Avenue in Midtown, Southern California. Although Midtown is a fabricated place, it is loosely based off the city of Redlands, California. So far, all my novels either take place in Midtown or are about characters who came from Midtown. If you pay attention, you'll find familiar settings and people crossing paths from one novel to another, and from one series to another, as well.

From the Inside Flap I came awake slowly, regret pressing down on my eyelids. A haunting aria had found wings and escaped my dreams to accompany me back to reality. The words were unintelligible, but each phrase tore new holes in the fragile fabric of my heart. I groaned and curled in on myself, not yet ready to face a new day.Alone. It was not how I'd planned to spend my first trip to Italy.Morning, however, wasn't something I could hold back by refusing to open my eyes. The melody of the rich mezzo soprano didn't fade away either, but grew louder and more heartfelt as the real-life songtress below my window warmed up in the morning sunlight....Seven AM in Lucca, and the quaint medieval town was teeming with life, fueled by a caffeine-and Mediterranean-air-induced high. Bicycle bells jingle-jangled, and boisterous greetings volleyed from one side of the narrow streets to the other. School children laughed and called out to comrades as they scurried off to class."Why is everyone so happy?" I pulled a lumpy pillow over my head, but I could find no entry back into the anesthetizing arms of sleep. My first morning in this enchanted place, and I felt more like a forgotten princess in a tower than a girl on a much-anticipated trip to Italy.

By Kit-Kat75 The story starts out with Ani discovering that her boyfriend has a family...and her heart is shattered. In an effort to heal, she takes her college graduation trip to Italy a few months early, but a bicycle accident leaves her without a thing to her name. Up to this point, I wasn't sure about the book and if it would draw me in enough or just be a downer, but after this point, I found myself pleasantly surprised to see that everything turned right around and completely engrossed me.I've never been to Italy, but I feel like I've been there now. Ms. Doughty's descriptions are vivid and detailed. Ani first encounters Paulo, but for some reason, although their paths have crossed a few times, he seems reluctant to help her. After the accident, Ani is taken to Dr Cosimo Lazzaro's family home to recover from her accident and finds herself enveloped in olive groves and romance. Cosimo is quite the charmer. Compared to David Gandy, he's very handsome and suave, yet Ani's heart isn't sure about another smooth talker. What's a girl to do--go for a reluctant man, a willing man, or no one at all?I couldn't get enough of the setting descriptions. I also loved the other characters. Each is full of a unique personality and true friendships are formed. I loved the growth and healing that Ani goes through. The surprising romance is toe tingling and believable. I love a story that is brain candy, yet has some substance and this is a perfect combination. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series!Content: swoony romance (kissing, but clean); mild violence (accident); no language or religious elements, aside from the characters visiting an ancient religious statue and mentioning a prayer. Clean!*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review*

A trip to Tuscany with friends By wyrtwizard College student Ani Tomlin has come to Lucca, Italy to help take her mind off a relationship that ended very badly when she discovers that her boyfriend is married with a family. Her vacation takes an unexpected turn on her first full day in Lucca when she is injured in a bicycle accident and her purse is stolen in the immediate aftermath of the accident, leaving Ani without her passport, driver's license, traveler's checks, credit cards, and cell phone. Without other resources, Ani is forced to rely on help from people she barely knows in order to return to her guesthouse. Soon it becomes clear that Ani's injuries are more extensive than she first thought, and she must rely again on strangers to get to a physician. After learning that she must remain off her feet while she recovers, Ani accepts an invitation to stay with the family of the handsome doctor who is treating her ankle injury. They operate an olive mill, and the harvest season is about to start.Ani soon finds herself falling for not one but two very different men. Having just left a failing relationship, should she pursue a new relationship with one of these two contenders? And if so, how can she choose between them! The book is a pleasure to read, with beautiful descriptions that immerse the reader into Lucca and the surrounding Tuscan countryside. The characters are believable and well-developed.The book is described as a coming of age tale in the "New adult" category, but women of any age will enjoy it. It does not particularly feel like a book for young adult readers, as some themes and situations are for mature readers. All the way to heaven is a clean read, with no vulger language or explicit sex or violence. There is reference to marital infidelity, but the descriptions of romance between characters do not progress beyond kissing. Probably the only dead giveaway showing the "new adult" status of the book is Ani's description of one character with thinning hair and the start of wrinkles as "in his late forties or early fifties, about the age of my dad." The novel is not overtly Christian fiction, but there are brief mentions of faith through the book. Some of the characters discuss the Bible, pray, and attend church regularly, though we do not actually see them at church. The title of the book is inspired by the writings of the late medieval mystic St. Catherine of Siena, and one of the characters briefly discusses St. Catherine's philosophy. At first I was a little bothered by the way Ani got caught up in a storybook romance (or two romances!) so soon after her previous relationship ended in an epically bad fashion. Wouldn't it have been better for her to gain more confidence in herself before getting into another relationship? And how often do people really meet potential soulmates while on a short vacation out of the country? However, the plot developed in a plausible way, and Ani certainly had her share of setbacks that balanced the promise of new romance, so I just sat back and enjoyed my time in Tuscany with Ani and the other characters. I am glad to see that this book is the start of a new series.I received an advance reading copy in exchange for a fair review.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. a great friend, and a wonderful boyfriend By DarkJade Anica is a college student in her final year. She thinks she has it all- two job offers, a great friend, and a wonderful boyfriend. Said boyfriend wants to keep their relationship quiet because he is one of her professors, until Anica sees him at dinner with his wife and children. Anica is devastated by her putting trust, once again, in the wrong person and decides to take her graduation trip to Tuscany early. Anica has emotional healing to do and one misstep after another upon her arrival leads her to be even more closed off. Her bicycle accident opens her to the generosity of the Lazzaro family. To truly appreciate Tuscany and her life, Anica must learn what it means to open her hands and open her heart.A wonderful story with no cliffhanger. The characters are easy to relate to and trying to see the way forward with Anica is a beautiful journey.

About the Author About Us: The Michelle Angelique series is co-written by Lori Jean and S. Jay. We work on all of our books together, talk about them daily, and throw story, character, and plot ideas back and forth like old friends, because we are. About Me: Mostly I'm just one of "us" -- a regular person. I grew up in the South, where religion is the cornerstone of life, but things like sex are never discussed. Conversely, football is almost a form of religion and is hotly debated daily. The rivers were murky and, according to the adults, full of child-eating alligators. The old folks sent us kids to pick up pecans that fell from trees along the river banks and in the parks. Great pecan pies were the rewards for our efforts. We were poor, but never hungry. Mom kept us clean and overfed. She stuffed us with fat-laden foods and greater amounts of love. I guess religion and Mom's love weren't enough to overcome those raging teenage hormones, because I got pregnant in high school. I moved to Compton, California, to live with my grandmother. In those days, Compton was deep in the hood. All of my cousins and my baby brother were in the gangs. They were in rival gangs, which made things very interesting at family gatherings. It would be nice to win some awards someday, but not near as nice as hearing what you think about Michelle Angelique's books. I love to hear from readers. So, please, drop me a line at Lori (@) lorijeangrace (dot) com or visit me at lorijeangrace (dot) com and tell me your thoughts about Michelle Angelique or any of the other people in her books. I love writing and don't know why it took so long to start. I've done other work. Some was steady boring stuff with the government. Some has been fun and taken me around the world. I taught English in Vietnam and Thailand where Michelle Angelique got her training. It's a twenty-four hour flight. Maybe that's one reason why - and an accurate reflection of reality - Michelle was the only African American woman in Bangkok.

Sista’s Revenge – an African American Action Adventure Thriller set in the hood By Ed Benjamin Life in the hood. . . and more!“Sista’s Revenge” is a remarkable tour de force by the talented new thriller author on the literary scene, Lori Jean Grace. (‘Lori Jean Grace’ is a collaboration between Lori Jean Grace and S. Jay Jackson – as you find out in the afterword.) The authors transport you into the world of Michelle Angelique, a street-smart African American assassin. In this first novel of the series, Michelle has returned to Los Angeles' hood after a four-year absence seeking revenge for the deaths of her brother and cousin. This urban action adventure tale follows Michelle as she seeks revenge for the killings. This extraordinary work has it all . . . extremely well-written, deftly plotted, great dialogue, action sequences, racy scenes, etc. The dialogue is fantastic and you sense the verisimilitude of the street in the Los Angeles hood. The dialogue absolutely enthralled me.By reading the authors’ notes and visiting the website, you find out that the authors actually grew up in the ‘hood”. One lived there as a teenage mother raising her child and the other roamed the streets making macho (I bet he’s glad he didn’t meet Michele while roaming the streets). The authors know the culture, the mores, and the vernacular of the street. It is clear they have “been there, done that and got the T-shirt.”They have put that experience to good use by providing the reader with a sense of realism unparalleled by any other author. You can compare the realism Sista’s Revenge depicts about life in the streets with the realism of the police procedural depicted by John Sanford and Michael Connelly in their novels; its that good..The story also contains its share of racy scenes as Michelle and her friends live life in the fast lane on the streets and in the nightclubs of the hood in Los Angeles. As you read this action thriller, a series of actions develops the plot nicely as surprise after surprise greets Michelle as she seeks to uncover the people involved in murdering her brother. The authors do an excellent job of resolving the action in this story, while letting a hint of a plot thread situation dangle just enough to entice the reader to continue with the further adventures of Michelle. This is an absolutely outstanding piece of work and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the street-smart urban adventure action thriller genre featuring the newest bad ass in town, the African American anti- heroine, Michelle Angelique.Heck! It’s just a durn good story.I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. And there is a series. There is a series featuring Michelle. You can find out more about Lori Jean Grace on her website at http://www.lorijeangrace.comDon’t miss this amazing work!

Excellent urban adventure on women finding their power and strength By DFReview In Sista’z Revenge, Michelle Angelique returns to the hood to revenge the deaths of her brother and cousin three years earlier. She spent those three years training in martial arts, learning techniques and strategies, increasing her strength and resolve, and becoming a professional assassin. When she returns, she visits with her two best friends from school. She knows she can’t tell the two women everything, but that she must tell them something, and they might be able to help. They gain information that leads them up the ladder of those responsible for the deaths. Meanwhile, a boyfriend of one of the women beats up his girlfriend and then the other friend. No one hurts Michelle’s friends, something he soon realizes the hard way.Her search for the murderers and all responsible for the deaths of her brother and cousin lead her in unexpected and interesting directions.Sista’z Revenge is an excellent story of women finding their own power and fighting for what they believe and to defend themselves. Domestic violence is much too common and must be stopped. Women have become complacent and accepting, but this story is an excellent example of what women can do when they stick together and when they fight back. Less recognized and just as important is the rise of domestic violence against men. No one deserves to live that way, and no one should accept those situations.

Gritty and Original By Anne O'connell This vigilante romp through the hood will grab you by the scruff of the neck and drag you into an intense world of violence and revenge. It's an urban action adventure with an original twist. Michelle Angelique is a young woman who, after the gang-style killing of her brother and cousin, has had enough. But she's smart enough to bide her time. She escapes the hood and spends four years training and planning her revenge, not only against her brother's killers but against all that is wrong in the world she grew up in. She's a bad-ass, anti-heroine who realizes that the law isn't always on your side and sometimes, you just have to take it into your own hands! It's a realistic look into life in the 'projects' with complex character development that has you rooting for Michelle, an urban anti-hero/Robin Hood/assassin and her merry band of sista'z (really... they have a hell of a time doling out punishments). It's grab your throat graphic, so brace yourself. Looking forward to the next in the series!

Ryan, having just gotten out of a long term relationship was out with his buddy when he meets Drea, after his friend hounds him about gettin back out there and having some mindless fun, he chats up Drea, not really feelin it but thinking she's nice he offers her a ride home when her friend disappears with his friend...I didn't really like the fact that his friend was in a committed relationship with a live in girlfriend and cheated, but... they were secondaries and thats as far as we heard from them really...After a couple times of hanging out Ryan finds out Zach is gay... I liked Ryan's reaction to finding out... wasn't a big deal, just a hmm, never would have guessed it... I was sad that Zach's reaction was to get defensive though, I hate that people still have to feel threatened for exposing something like that. Like anyone else has a right to be upset or offended by it.... But I thought Ryan handled it well.I also felt for Zach after he and Ryan hook up, we didn't really see his POV from the next day like we did Ryan, but I can imagine it was discouraging, liking someone then having them freak out over what they'd done together. Luckily though, Ryan comes back and things work out. I thought it was sweet how patient and understanding Zach is and I liked how it ended up. Looking forward to reading more about these two!*~Book 2*~Zach and Ryan are 7 months in :) I love reading about these two, and oh how the tables have turned, Ryan is much more secure in their relationship and the fact that he's not attracted to men... well, maybe not "men" but Zach anyway....He's bolder and seems to be much happier this book. I really felt for him when he told his mom he was in a relationship with a man, and by her reaction. You only get one time to "come out" like that, and how she reacted will be the one thing Ryan remembers I'm sure. I have two sons, they're only 10-12 now, but if there ever comes a day when they tell me their gay, I'll hug them and tell them I love them and as long as their happy, then I'm happy for them. I can't imagine how scary it is to come out and have the people you care about most, and who are supposed to care about you react in a negative way. That really sucks, and although her reaction could have been a lot worse, I still felt for him because of it.Ryan is also self-conscious about Zach working with his ex. I really feel for him there too, because I know I go straight psycho when my husband even mentions an ex LOL so I can't blame him for getting worked up about it... But I liked how he handled it. Not accusatory or untrusting of Zach.... Now... here's where it got tricky... I'm not sure I care for Steve and I know the next book is about him... He's good at pushing boundries and not really caring about people's personal space. I'm not sure how I feel about how he manipulated the situation between Zach and Ryan and my heart absolutely broke for both of them. I was furious that they let it happen to behin with, at Ryan for even wanting it and at Zach for not stopping it when he knew he wasn't comfortable with it. ... then they were both stubborn and hurt and unwilling to talk to one another.... I really hated it for them but I'm happy with the way it turned out. I'm still not sure about Steve, but I love Zach and Ryan together and feel like they belong together... Another hit! Loved it!*~Book 3*~First... can we take a second to appreciate the cover of this book.... sigh.... okay, moving on...(while looking back)Here, we have Zach's ex Steve.... lemme tell ya, I did NOT like Steve in the last book so I was hesitant to read this one... I shouldn't have been... He more than made up for it and seeing inside Steve's head and getting to know the person he is, it's impossible not to love him... Even by the end of the first chapter I was completely smitten with him. Steve, as we knew from last book, owns a waffle stand, and everyday at 10 after 6, he see's someone that catches his eye walking just a step behind the douchiest of douchbags...who we later find out is a pretty big "made man"...his family is a big deal and has been for generations so he's not someone to be messed with, but one encounter leaves Steve seeing red when he notices Joey, a.k.a. "Little Duck" (that is SO cute by the way) is being mistreated... Worrying about him after not seeing him one day, he shows up back at work to find Joey beat up and not having anywhere to go... He was wary of Steve at first, but it's impossible not to see how genuine he is in wanting to take care of him. Of course we know that, but I can see where Joey would be skeptical....I love how despite wanting Joey really bad, he tries to take his time with him, get him to trust him, let him do things in his own time, but Joey sees how great he is pretty quickly and the banter between these two is so cute, I loved seeing them get to know each other. Steve will do anything to make sure Joey is safe, which makes me wonder why he ever questioned wether or not he loved him because he's literally risking his life to keep Joey safe. If that isn't love I dunno what is :)Calling in favors from friends, some of them old friends he didn't think he'd see anymore, he does what he needs to do in order to keep Joey safe, it's a nerwracking angsty few days, but once Joey is free and clear to do what he wants, its no surprise he chooses Steve.. Why wouldn't he?I also love the others, Rachel and her mothering, Matty and Al (although I hope Al meets someone else who appreciates him), Spencer and Dylan, sigh... I can't wait to read about all of them! Best so far! On the Spencer!!

Such Love By Shandara I'm so glad that I bought this set because as an introduction to these amazing characters you really couldn't ask for better.Zach and Ryan, Steve and his 'Little Duck' they're all just superbly rendered characters and the stories are so engrossing that I literally had to put it down because I was heartbroken or worried that the HEA we hope for wouldn't happen but when they do you're as happy as the charcters. The stories are amazingly well written and the pop culture references made me laugh.Thoroughly enjoyable read looking forward to reading the next story about Spencer and Dylan. So click buy..

Not the most realistic MM stories, although they have a really nice base storyline. I enjoyed the first story the most because of the characters, disliked the second because of the direction it took (after so many months together, you'd think Ryan and Zach would have better communication, and more common sense). I liked the last story also as it had a more involved plot. The writing style is more tell, than show, but still a good read.

Harry Bosch crosses the line to team up with Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller in the new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.Detective Harry Bosch has retired from the LAPD, but his half-brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller, needs his help. A woman has been brutally murdered in her bed and all evidence points to Haller's client, a former gang member turned family man. Though the murder rap seems ironclad, Mickey is sure it's a setup.Bosch doesn't want anything to do with crossing the aisle to work for the defense. He feels it will undo all the good he's done in his thirty years as a homicide cop. But Mickey promises to let the chips fall where they may. If Harry proves that his client did it, under the rules of discovery, they are obliged to turn over the evidence to the prosecution.Though it goes against all his instincts, Bosch reluctantly takes the case. The prosecution's file just has too many holes and he has to find out for himself: if Haller's client didn't do it, then who did? With the secret help of his former LAPD partner Lucy Soto, Harry starts digging. Soon his investigation leads him inside the police department, where he realizes that the killer he's been tracking has also been tracking him.Thrilling, fast-paced, and impossible to put down, The Crossing shows without a shadow of doubt that Connelly is "a master of building suspense" (Wall Street Journal).

The Crossing (A Harry Bosch Novel), by Michael Connelly

Review "As always with a Bosch novel, the delight is in the 'inside police' details....What Bosch does discover in The Crossing...should keep him busy--and Connelly fans happy--for years to come."―Maureen Corrigan, Washington Post"A classic whodunit...an extra treat for the reader is being able to follow the case from the dual perspectives of the prosecution and the defense... Brothers Bosch and Haller may be, but at times they seem a lot like an ego and its id."―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review"Connelly continues to write quality crime fiction, and The Crossing is another great character study mixed with a truly baffling puzzle."―Jeff Ayers, Associated Press"Tense and effective"―Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal"The Crossing is another strong offering from perennial bestseller Michael Connelly.... He elevates the genre."―Colleen Kelly, Minneapolis Star Tribune"Connelly has created a subtle gem."―Barry Lancet, New York Journal of Books"Thrilling.... Harry is back in his groove....Finding the connections between the parts of the case...gives readers Harry at his best. We get the bonus of seeing Mickey take that case to court for one of his bravura performances."―Colette Bancroft, Tampa Bay Times"Connelly painstakingly and brilliantly shows Bosch slogging after the truth.... As always, Connelly's blackboard work is as precise as his finale is exciting."―Booklist"Masterly....Indeed, the notion of crossing resonates on different levels--the intersection of predator and prey, cops gone rogue, and for Bosch, the transition from one part of his life into something exciting and new."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"The Crossing again proves Connelly as a master of the genre."―Oline H. Cogdill, Sun-Sentinel"Michael Connelly remains one of the most reliable writers in the PI crowd. Thirty books on, his plots get tougher and his characters more engaging. The only thing better than Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller is having the pair together and that's what The Crossing delivers, one of the best of Connelly's tales....You won't put this one down from first page to last."―Margaret Cannon, Globe and Mail"Connelly never dithers.... Despite his prolific output, Connelly rarely stumbles and he continues to find new and interesting angles to explore in detective and legal matters."―Erik Spanberg, Christian Science Monitor

Fortunately, criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller has a task that may be right up Bosch's alley--to find out whether Haller's client, Da'Quan Foster, is being framed for the beating death of thirty-eight year old Alexandra Parks, an assistant city manger for West Hollywood. The trial is scheduled to take place is in six weeks. Harry is reluctant to cross over to defense work, also known as "the dark side." Still, if a miscarriage of justice has occurred, Bosch has the skills and determination to uncover the truth.Since Harry no longer has a badge, he has no official standing. All he has is "a letter of engagement" stating that he is operating under the aegis of Mickey Haller and his licensed private investigator, Dennis Wojciechowski, who has been injured in an accident. Haller gives Harry the murder book, which Bosch proceeds to scrutinize. In addition, Harry contacts his former partner, who takes risks to help him procure further information. Michael Connelly's "The Crossing" has multiple meanings. First, Harry crosses over from the prosecution to the defense, a move that makes neither him nor her former colleagues happy. A crossing may also be "the place where the circle of the victim's life overlaps the circle of the predator." Why and under what circumstances did these people meet and how did they interact? Harry will not stop digging until he knows the answers to all of these questions. He methodically examines the facts, employs his finely honed instincts to good effect, and interviews witnesses to clarify matters. Gradually he puts the pieces together and discovers a conspiracy involving greed, brutality, extortion, and corruption.Although some may prefer Bosch with badge in hand, it is fascinating to observe him facing this new chapter in his life. With his daughter leaving for college, he is an empty nester. His existence is solitary, with little to occupy his time other than restoring a 1950 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and listening to his beloved jazz music. Harry is most fulfilled when he gets his teeth into a complex inquiry; he notices small but telling details that others overlook and derives satisfaction from identifying and apprehending killers. Michael Connelly, who is one of the best in the business, presents us with a well-constructed and compelling plot; intriguing characters; spare, vivid, and fast-moving prose; sardonic humor; pitch perfect dialogue; an atmospheric California setting; and an iconic hero who is stubborn, brilliant, irascible, and always true to himself and his unique code of ethics.

Another great Harry Bosch book in the series as Harry goes over to the "dark side" By outwest Any fan of Michael Connelly is going to enjoy this book. The Bosch novels are usually fantastic, though his Mickey Haller ones can be fun as well) but his latest is sure to work well in the Harry Bosch series. It is a bit different than the rest of the series in that Harry Bosch has retired from the LAPD and is forcing legal action against them for kicking him out. Of course, he ends up helping out on a case for the attorney who has taken his civil case and next thing you know, Harry is right in the middle of a murder mystery. The flip of the story is that Harry is working for the defense, and rather than trying to put someone behind bars, is trying to keep someone from being convicted. The prosecution seems to have a solid case, and in his new role, Harry is in danger of betraying the very principles he's lived by his whole career and, as his old colleagues call it, has gone over to the defense "dark side."The pacing is deliberate and measured, until it builds to a classic Connelly ending. Any fan will enjoy this upcoming release, as it fits nicely into the Harry Bosch series. A great read.

The pace of the book made it easy to read, but I will confess that the overall length of the story seemed shorter than usual. Though the focus of the story was one single case which then led to other related cases (which happens a lot) - the book introduces the "bad guys" by name within the first few chapters, meaning that there was no big reveal or twist as per other Connelly books. Instead the book becomes about how Bosch solves the puzzle to which we already know the solution. Another irritant is that in prior books, Bosch seems adept at being able to spot that he is being tailed. Before his car was tagged, he was still followed a few times which I would have thought he should have noticed.I also thought that whilst fans of Connelly's writing will enjoy the partnership between Micky Haller and Bosch - Haller was effectively underused. He was effectively used to give Bosch someone to talk to so that his thoughts could be expressed verbally. Given that Bosch had "crossed over" there was very little made of any conflict between Haller and Bosch where they should have been. Haller at his best (which is in the court room) was only shown in the first and final chapters, and it really felt like the final courtroom sequence seemed unnecessary other than giving us a more Haller "action". At least it was refreshing for Haller to finally have an "innocent" client.Lastly - I can now not recall how many Bosch (or Haller) stories seem to conclude with the main character being threatened in their home. I appreciate that this makes it scarier, but seriously how many people have now been killed in or around Bosch's house? I just think that this has become a cliched climax on these books that has been overused.Again - this book was an enjoyable 6 hours of reading, but not the best Bosch, nor the best Connelly.
